A Little Goes A Long Way At Omaha Steaks

Family Dinner Ideas: Easy Omaha Steak Pot Pie Recipe | Tabitha Blue | Fresh Mommy Blog

Omaha Steaks is quite well-known for its lavish and pricey boxes of food. For example, some of these boxes, like their Gourmet Stock-Up Package, which features filet mignon, sirloin, chicken breast, and many, many more meats and side dishes, will cost you a couple of hundred dollars. While these are great deals for doomsday preppers, chances are, you don’t need to be spending that much on some fancy meat that you probably can’t get rid of fast enough.

That said, Omaha Steaks has plenty of more reasonable packages for the everyday diner as Business Insider reported in 2018, $20 can actually go a long way over at Omaha Steaks. For starters, it’s hard not to find at least a couple of promotional sales on their website. But also, you can typically grab a pack of eight sausages for around and a lot of times, just below $20. The same goes for certain cuts of beef, like their tenderloin tips.

But what’s the point of a cheap steak if it doesn’t taste any good? As Business Insider reported, the quality of what you get at Omaha Steaks typically surpasses that of what you can find in your local supermarket. If you’ve got the extra cash to spare and want to go to a local butcher or steakhouse, then, of course, you can’t beat that but Omaha Steaks might just be the next best thing.

Won’t Be Buying From Them Anymore

I have sent Omaha Steaks products to a couple of relatives for years. I continued to send them even after the prices doubled because these people are hard to buy for & like their products, but after tonight I will be getting their gifts elsewhere. I clicked on a link in one of the Omaha Steaks emails, was taken to their website & a page popped up offering 3 One Chance Specials all of which listed free shipping as part of the package. I chose one, but when I went to check out found that I was going to be charged $19.99 for shipping. There was only the 1 item in the cart so there should not have been a shipping charge. I called Customer service & probably talked to the RUDEST woman there. She insisted that I needed to spend more to get the free shipping & claimed that she couldn’t look up this offer even though I gave her the item number. Ultimately, she hung up on me. At this point I didn’t know what to do as it is December 19th & I need to get a gift to these relatives by Christmas so I called back & spoke to a nicer woman who also said I needed to spend more & couldn’t find the package I ordered but did offer to find something to make up the difference. We settled on some seasoning which they won’t use, but like I said I was desperate to get this gift ordered. It wasn’t a lot of money, but I am still angry, if they say free shipping, they should not charge for it. I was looking at the list of items in the cart when I called, so this was not a lapse of memory on my part.

A Classic Steak And Kidney Pie

This is our best-selling classic. Loaded with locally sourced chunky steak and diced kidney, bathed in a rich homemade gravy with a delicious buttery short crust pastry.

Historically oysters were used rather than kidney! However, as they got a little pricey, kidney became the obvious replacement. If you believe in culinary cycles then we will be using oysters sometime soon.

Cottage Pie Vs Shepherds Pie

Beef Shepherd

Both Shepherds Pie and Cottage Pie are two iconic British dishes, packed with meat, veggies, and a whole lot of flavor.

Either make a wonderful choice for lunch and dinner, being relatively easy and cheap to make.

While they are very similar, there are a few important differences between Cottage Pie and Shepherd’s Pie.

It can be difficult to decide which one to cook or even which one to order at a restaurant.

Personally, I love making both of these pies – they make great family dishes.

Thats why I have decided to write this article, in hopes that once you know how to tell these delicious pies apart, you will be blessing your family with them too. I have also included my favorite Cottage Pie recipe.

How To Test Your Steak For Doneness

For the most accurate results, use a meat thermometer to test for doneness:

  • Rare — 125 degrees F
  • Medium Rare — 130 degrees F
  • Medium — 140 degrees F
  • Medium Well — 150 degrees F
  • Well done — 160 degrees F

You can also use your fist. Admittedly, this method is more art than science, but it will give you a general idea of doneness. First, make your hand into a fist. You’ll notice there’s a fleshy, roughly triangular patch of skin between your folded-up thumb and pointer finger. Touch that flap of skin and compare it to the steak. Here’s the deal:

  • Very loose non-fist — Rare
  • A grip halfway between loose and tight — Medium

See? Not science. But close enough for grill-work.

How To Cook Steak In The Oven

Steak with wine sauce and mushrooms

Broiling steak in the oven gives you grill-like results in the kitchen. Broiling is like grilling turned on its head, with the high heat coming from above the meat instead of below it. Both grilling and broiling are fast and easy. Here’s how to broil in 5 easy steps.

1. Before turning on the broiler, remove thawed steaks from the refrigerator and let them rest at room temperature for about 15 minutes. Then pat the steaks dry with paper towels and season the meat as you like.

2. Trim excess fat from the meat to avoid grease flare-ups. Make a few vertical cuts along the edges of the steak to keep it from curling under the broiler.

3. Situate the top oven rack to just below the broiler coils. Turn the oven on to broil. Allow it to preheat for 5 minutes.

4. Place steaks on a broiling panor if you don’t have a broiling pan, make one: line a shallow baking sheet with foil and set a flat rack on top of it. But do not use a glass baking pan under the broiler it will break under the high heat.

5. Slide the steaks under the glowing coils. The distance between the top of the steaks and the heat source should be between 3 and 5 inches. If the top rack position is too close to the coils, lower the rack to the second position.

7. If the outside is nicely crusted but the inside is too raw for your liking, turn the oven temperature down to 350 degrees F and roast until done. Remove and let the meat rest for 5 to 10 minutes.

Are Shepherds Pie And Cottage Pie The Same

To put it simply, no. Shepherds Pie and Cottage Pie use different meats, and traditionally, different types of potatoes.

They both have their own history and origins however, they are pretty similar dishes these days.

So who wins this pie vs pie debate? Well, that all depends on if you prefer lamb or beef.

To confuse you even more, Cumberland Pie also goes hand in hand with the two, but well leave that for another day.

Shepherd’s Pie: A Summary

Steakhouse Shepherd

Shepherds Pie has been said to originate from Ireland, even though its known these days as a very British dish.

It became a thing almost 80 years after the Cottage Pie, in 1870 .

Compared to the Cottage Pie, Shepherds Pie was a much more upmarket version, using ground lamb or mutton instead of beef.

This is how it obtained its name since shepherds would eat it after attending to their sheep.

Oven Roasted Steak With Red Wine Pan Sauce

Servings: 2

  • Coarse kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2 tablespoons butter

1. Bring the steaks to room temperature. Rub the steaks with 1/4 teaspoon oil per side and generously season with salt and pepper.

2. Preheat oven to 500 degrees F . Place a 10-inch ovenproof skillet or cast-iron skillet in the oven as it preheats. When oven reaches 500 degrees F , use a baking mitt to remove the pan from oven. Be careful! The pan and the handle will be extremely hot. Place the pan on the stovetop and turn the heat to high.

3. Immediately place steaks in the middle of the hot, dry pan. Cook 1 to 2 minutes without moving turn steaks with tongs, and cook another 1 to 2 minutes.

4. Transfer the pan with the seared steaks to the hot oven. Roast in the center of the oven until the steaks are cooked to your liking, about 3 to 5 minutes.

5. Transfer the cooked steaks to a warm platter and tent loosely with aluminum foil.

Give it a rest. Before slicing or serving, let the meat sit for 5 to 10 minutes. The steak will continue to cook and the juices will redistribute throughout the meat.

6. While the steaks are resting, place the skillet over medium heat. Add ½ cup dry red wine to the skillet and bring to a boil. As the wine boils, use a wooden spoon to scrap any brown bits off the bottom of the pan. Let the liquid boil until reduced to approximately 1/3 cup. Remove pan from heat. Add the butter, swirling the pan to incorporate it into the sauce.
