GREENVILLE, S.C.
An Upstate small business owner has formed a group to advocate for other small businesses at the state level.
Diane Hardy, owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Greenville, made the official announcement last week in Greenville.
Hardy said she understands the challenges small business owners across the state face. Its that personal understanding, paired with her experience in business during COVID-19 that compelled her to launch her newest mission.
After COVID, I checked with our local officials and our state elected officials I said, whos speaking with us down in Columbia? They said, you really dont have too much of a voice down here. So I thought, wow, somebody needs to do something to change that, Hardy said.
Shortly after, she launched the Mom and Pop Alliance of South Carolina.
The organization has three key goals in mind:
Advocating for small businesses, improving communication from businesses to elected officials and educating small business owners on current legislation.
Hardy and others volunteer their time to help keep membership fees low, she said.
Hardy said she hopes to lend her voice to the nearly 400,000 small businesses statewide.

INDIANAPOLIS Nothing Bundt Cakes is inviting customers to celebrate a major milestone with free cake.
On Thursday, September 1, the company is giving out free mini bundt cakes to the first 250 customers at locations across North America to celebrate its 25th birthday. Each of those recipients will receive an individually packaged Confetti Bundtlet, the bakery chain said.
There will also be an online contest offering a grand prize of a $25,000 birthday party. Twenty-five runners-up will receive a $100 Nothing Bundt Cakes gift card.
Fans can enter from Sept. 125 and sharing what winning would mean to them.
Winners will be announced in October.
Nothing Bundt Cakes has nearly 450 locations in the U.S. and Canada. The bakeries offer four cake sizes in nine flavors, including Red Velvet, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Lemon, and Confetti.

Sapakoff: How The Nothing Bundt Cakes Franchise Boom Got A Big Lift From Clemson’s Dabo Swinney
Debbie Shwetz and Dena Tripp started Nothing Bundt Cakes out of their own home kitchens before moving to a second Las Vegas store while working with former commercial leasing agent Dabo Swinney, now Clemson’s head football coach. There are now 221 stores.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney planned to address his team Thursday afternoon about a video that appears to show two football players boxing inside the locker room.

Swinney, best known as Clemsons national championship-winning football coach, helped give Nothing Bundt Cakes a boost. Founders Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz were taking the big leap from homespun concept to a second Las Vegas outlet in 2001 and Swinney, between football gigs, was the commercial leasing agent who made it happen.

Memories of the Las Vegas meeting came back to Swinney one day in 2014 when he and his wife Kathleen pulled off the highway in Nashville, Tenn.
We stopped off to grab a sandwich and I looked next door and I went Nothing Bundt Cakes? What? Swinney said. I always loved it it was such a neat product. And son of a gun, here they are franchised nationwide, I guess.
Swinney immediately googled. He found the Nothing Bundt Cakes website and discovered the coast-to-coast growth.
I just said Dadgum, theyre all over the place, Swinney said. I know they probably dont remember who I am but I took a little pride in that.
Oh, they know Dabo. Tripp and Shwetz have followed his head coaching triumphs at Clemson. As Swinney raised the national championship trophy in Tampa on Jan. 9, Tripp was watching in her Las Vegas living room.
She turned to her husband, Blaine.
Can you believe this? she said.
Yes, that same shopping center guy.
Where Dabo is today and what he was doing when we first met him is kind of phenomenal, Tripp said. So, yeah, I kind of drop that name with people.
Back in 2001, Swinney was 31, a go-getter piling up commissions and bonuses that added up to an annual take of $200,000 but hoping for a return to football.
Tripp and Shwetz had this modest idea for a second store.
Shwetz retired and sold out last year.
