Seek The Lords Help In Serving Others

God Tells His Story in Scars | Isaiah 53:5 | Our Daily Bread Video Devotional

Remember that we should not only be looking inward when we seek a daily measure of divine bread. If we are to become more like the Master, He who came not to be ministered unto, but to minister , we will seek His help in being of service to our fellowman day by day.

President Thomas S. Monson lives this principle better than anyone I know. There is ever present in his heart a prayer that God will reveal needs and means for him to assist those around him in any given day or moment of the day. One example from his time as a bishop illustrates the fact that sometimes even a little effort may, with the workings of the Spirit, yield remarkable fruit. I quote from Heidi Swintons biography of President Monson, To the Rescue:

One to whom reached out was Harold Gallacher. His wife and children were active in the Church, but not Harold. His daughter Sharon had asked Bishop Monson if he would do something to bring her father back into activity. As a bishop, he felt prompted one day to call on Harold. It was a hot summers day when he knocked on Harolds screen door. The bishop could see Harold sitting in his chair, smoking a cigarette and reading the newspaper. Who is it? Harold asked sullenly, without looking up.

Your bishop, Tom replied. Ive come to get acquainted and to urge your attendance with your family at our meetings.

Years later, a Brother Gallacher phoned the office of Elder Thomas S. Monson and asked to make an appointment to see him.

Our Daily Bread The People Have Spoken

This month Tyndale released the brand new Our Daily Bread Bible , a great new daily devotional Bible which contains 365 Our Daily Bread devotions. Our Daily Bread is the most widely used devotional in the English language, and it only makes sense to pair it with a great Bible translation like the NLT.

The Our Daily Bread devotionals have touched countless lives, here are just a few comments from people whos lives have been impacted over the years.

All my life while growing up my grandmother gave my sister and me Our Daily Bread each month and wrote a note inside. This act of faithfulness had an enormous impact on my life. My mother does the same for my daughter. Thank you so much for your ministry. It blesses me and countless others daily. Molly

Just wanted to tell you how much Our Daily Bread means to my grandson who is incarcerated. Through these daily readings he has given his heart to the Lord and is testifying daily to other inmates and has started a Bible study. There were two when he first started and now there are four and growing weekly. Gerry

When I first became a Christian, I wanted to know the Bible but it seemed overwhelming, so I started with Our Daily Bread. Claire

You have no idea how many times the Holy Spirit will use the daily devotional to minister to a sore spot in my heart and help me draw closer to the Lord. Laurin

Odb Message For Today

While scuba diving in 2021, Jennifers eyes fixed on a small, green bottle at the bottom of a river. She scooped up what she describes as a once-in-a-lifetime find. The bottle contained a message written by a young man on his eighteenth birthday in 1926! The words requested that whoever discovered the message return it to him. Jennifer used Facebook to locate a delighted family member of the man. Although hed died in 1995, his once-hidden note brought joy to Jennifer and the mans family.

In 2 Kings 22:8, we read that Hilkiah made an extraordinary find when he found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord. The high priest found what was likely the book of Deuteronomy. When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he was both deeply moved and greatly distressed . Like the temple in Judah itself, God and the reading of and obedience to the Scriptures Hed inspired had been neglected by the people. In repentance, the king had the temple swept clean of idols and anything that would displease God as he instituted reforms for his nation .

Today, our Bibles contain sixty-six books that reveal Gods wisdom and instructionincluding Deuteronomy. As we read and listen to them, may the Holy Spirit transform our minds and reform our ways. Dive into the life-changing story of Scripture today and find wisdom to explore for a lifetime!

Who do people believe Jesus is? Some say He was a good teacher, but just a man. Author C. S. Lewis wrote, Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher.

These now-famous words from Mere Christianity propound that Jesus would not have been a great prophet if He falsely claimed to be God. That would be the ultimate heresy. While talking with His disciples as they walked between villages, Jesus asked them, Who do people say I am? . Their answers included John the Baptist, Elijah, and one of the prophets . But Jesus wanted to know what they believed: Who do you say I am? Peter got it right. You are the Messiah , the Savior.

But who do we say Jesus is? Jesus could not have been a good teacher or prophet if what He said about Himselfthat He and the Father are one wasnt true. His followers and even the demons declared His divinity as the Son of God . Today, may we spread the word about who Christ is as He provides what we need. By: Alyson Kieda

Reflect: Who do you say Jesus is? If you believe Hes the Son of God, then how can you share who He is with others?

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for being the way, the truth, and the life. Im glad I can cling to You. Help me to share with others the good news of who You are.

10 Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, Hilkiah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.

ODB FOR TODAYS INSIGHT: The reforms of Josiah, Judahs sixteenth and last good king, are described in 2 Kings 2223 and 2 Chronicles 3435. He became king at eight years of age and ruled for thirty-one years . Josiahs grandfather Manasseh and father, Amon, were grossly idolatrous and evil in the fifty-seven years they reigned . At age sixteen, Josiah began to seek after God. At twenty, he began destroying all the places of idolatry.

Watching Out For One Another

Jose, a seventy-seven-year-old substitute teacher, had been living out of his car for eight years. Every night, the elderly man bunked down in his 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX, carefully monitoring the car battery as it powered his computer for his evenings work. Jose used the money earmarked for rent and instead sent it to numerous family members in Mexico who needed it more. Early every morning, one of the teachers former students saw Jose rummaging through his trunk. I just felt I needed to do something about it, the man said. So, he launched a fundraiser and weeks later handed Jose a check to help him fund a place to live.

Though Scripture repeatedly instructs us to watch out for one another, its sometimes difficult to see past our own concerns. The prophet Zechariah rebuked Israel who, rather than worshiping God or serving others, were feasting for selves . Ignoring their shared communal life, they disregarded their neighbors need. Zechariah made Gods instructions clear: the people were to administer true justice show mercy and compassion to one another . . . not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor .

While its easy to be consumed with our own needs, faithfulness calls us to tend to the needs of others. In the divine economy, theres plenty for all. And God, in His mercy, chooses to use us to give some of that plenty to others.

Daily Choices Have Eternal Consequences

Thinking of our daily bread keeps us aware of the details of our lives, of the significance of the small things that occupy our days. Experience teaches that in a marriage, for example, a steady stream of simple kindnesses, help, and attention do much more to keep love alive and nurture the relationship than an occasional grand or expensive gesture. That is not to say, brethrenyou who are marriedthat your wife wouldnt appreciate something new and really nice to wear or occasionally some other gift that expresses, with an exclamation point, how you feel about her . Its just that a constant, daily expression of affection, in both words and actions, is far more meaningful in the long run.

Bible in a Year:Psalms 79 Acts 18

Key Verse: Who do people say I am? Mark 8:27

Todays Scripture:

Our Daily Bread 13 July 2022 || ODB For Today Insight

We can observe two things from the disciples response to Jesus question, Who do people say I am? . First, the disciples knew what the people were saying about who Jesus was: Some say John the Baptist others say Elijah and still others, one of the prophets . They werent simply an isolated and insulated group, oblivious to the culture and people around them. His disciples continued to interact with and understand the people to whom Christ was reaching out.

One day soon, theyd be sent to continue His message. Second, the peoples various answers to who Jesus was illustrated that even people who heard and saw Him had different opinions about Him. But Jesus wasnt content with general answers to the question of who He was. He asked His disciples this question directly. Peter answered, You are the Messiah . By: J.R. Hudberg

CES Fireside for Young Adults January 9, 2011 Brigham Young University

We older adults, including parents and Church leaders and professors and friends, often admonish you to plan for the future. We encourage you to pursue education and vocational training as preparation for life in the years ahead. We urge you to lay a foundation for marriage and family and to act on those plans. We caution you to think of possible consequences down the road when making decisions about what you do today . We counsel you to think about how you will measure success in your life and then to establish the patterns and practices that will lead to that success.

All of this expresses a wise and prudent course in life, and in what I say tonight, I do not minimize in any way the importance of thinking and planning ahead. Thoughtful planning and preparation are key to a rewarding future, but we do not live in the futurewe live in the present. It is day by day that we work out our plans for the future it is day by day that we achieve our goals. It is one day at a time that we raise and nurture our families. It is one day at a time that we overcome imperfections. We endure in faith to the end one day at a time. It is the accumulation of many days well-lived that adds up to a full life and a saintly person. And so I would like to talk to you about living well day by day.

Looking To God Daily For Our Needs Nurtures Faith

Our Daily Bread

You will remember the great exodus of the tribes of Israel from Egypt and the 40 years in the wilderness before entering their promised land. This massive host of well over a million people had to be fed. Certainly that number in one location could not long subsist on hunting game, and their seminomadic lifestyle at the time was not conducive to raising crops or livestock in any sufficient quantity. Jehovah solved the challenge by miraculously providing their daily bread from heavenmanna. This small edible substance which appeared on the ground each morning was something quite new and unknown. The name manna, in fact, was derived from words meaning What is it? Through Moses, the Lord instructed the people to gather enough each day for that day, except on the day before the Sabbath, when they were to gather enough for two days.

At the beginning, despite Mosess specific instructions, some tried to gather more than enough for one day and store the balance:

And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank .

As promised, however, when they gathered twice the normal daily quantity of manna on the sixth day, it did not spoil:

And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.

Six days ye shall gather it but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none .
