History Of The Bil Jac Brand Dog Food

Before we get to our review, lets take a look at the history of the Bil Jac dog food brand. Bil Jac dog food was started by two brothers, Bill and Jack Kelly, who grew up on a farm and always had an affinity for animals. The brothers were called to serve in World War II, and Bill went to boot camp on a base with a kennel of German Shepherds being trained to sniff bombs. As the story goes, he saw that the dogs were malnourished, asked his supervisor if he could help, and asked his dad to send meat and other supplies from the farm so he could make dog food for the dogs on base. When the reviews were in, Bill improved the health of the dogs with his special pet food.

When the brothers returned from the war, Bill realized he had a real passion for dogs and pet food, and he and his brother set out to improve dog food nutrition. Through trial and error, Bill refined his dog food recipe and, in 1947, Bil-Jac dog food began.

The original dog food recipe was frozen and used meat as the number one ingredient, something that was astoundingly different from the other dog food of the day. It was so unique, the Kelly brothers received the first dog food patent ever issued in 1951.

Reviews: How Does Bil

Bil-Jac dog food is a middle-of-the-road dog food thats comparable to what youd find at the supermarket. Its recommended for people who arent looking for premium dog food, but its reputation as a premium brand may be a little undeserved. To understand why, lets look at the ingredients.

Although the ingredients vary between recipes, there are some that Bil-Jac uses frequently. They are fond of saying that they use 25 pounds of chicken for every 30-pound bag of dog food, but what does that mean?

Real chicken is usually the first ingredient, but it contains a lot of water. After the chicken is cooked, it loses some of its volume, so real chicken doesnt make up the entire 25 pounds that Bil-Jac is referring to on the label.

Chicken by-products are also listed as an ingredient in a lot of these foods. Bil-Jac often includes an explanation on the label as to why, such as organ meats only or as a source of glucosamine and chondroitin. But this isnt always the case. Chicken by-products do include organ meats, but they also include beaks, feet, and every other part of the bird. Chicken by-product meal shows up in a lot of these recipes, too.

While Bil-Jac may use 25 pounds of chicken in every 30-pound bag, its important to realize that doesnt mean it includes 25 pounds of real chicken meat.

Oatmeal is another common ingredient. This whole grain is a good choice for dog food. Its naturally rich in vitamins and minerals and provides necessary dietary fiber.

Start With Small Breed Puppy Food For Growth

On average, small breed dogs grow and develop over a 9-12 month time frame. So relatively speaking, they are done growing in a short timeframe. While they are growing, they may require up to twice the energy of adult dogs! Their high metabolism rate and digestion needs require the right mix of nutrients. Bil-Jac understands these requirements and has carefully formulated Bil-Jac Small Breed Puppy Food with fresh, never frozen chicken as the number one ingredient to provide the nutrition small breed puppies need. In fact, Bil-Jac uses 5 lbs. of real chicken to make a 6 lb. bag.

Small dogs tend to have a small stomach, though they typically need to eat large amounts of food in relation to their tummy size and body weight. In order to help your small dog get all the nutrients they need, its helpful to divide your puppys meals up over the course of the day. Small, energy-dense meals two to three times per day are recommended for puppies until they reach adulthood. Small breed puppies grow as much during their first year as human beings do in our first 17 years of life, so its important to keep up with the right diet as your little furball grows.

The Verdict On Bil Jac Dog Food

Bil-Jacs ingredient list does not support the idea that this is a premium brand. The quality of the ingredients might be great, but there are more things to consider. Saying that each bag contains massive amounts of chicken is a little misleading as all of this chicken isnt muscle meat. It includes chicken by-products and by-product meals, too. Plus, Bil-Jac uses other ingredients that also add protein so keep that in mind when looking at the analysis.

Bottom line? Bil-Jac is fine food for any dog, and they have a variety of recipes and types of food to choose from. But read the Bil Jac label carefully. If youre expecting a premium level dog food, you might be disappointed in Bil-Jac.

Small Breed Dogs Can Be Picky Eaters

Theres no scientific evidence to prove small breed dogs are pickier eaters. However, most dog parents will attest that small breeds can, at times, be highly selective in what theyll eat! Though our furry friends are an important part of our family life and we love to make them happy, sharing table food in an attempt to make meals more appealing isnt the best idea. This can lead to behavioral challenges such as begging or poor eating habits. More importantly, it may rob your best friend of the critical, balanced nutrition they need each day for health.

If your small dog is a picky eater, Bil-Jac Picky No More Small Breed Dog Food may be able to please your picky pal. Picky No More features real chicken liveran often irresistible taste dogs loveand can help deliver the high-quality protein your pooch needs to get back on track eating consistently.

Feeding Small Breed Adult And Senior Dogs

Once your dog is fully grown, you will want to determine the best way to feed them. Bil-Jac Small Breed Adult Food is an outstanding option to deliver the nutrients your small and mighty dog needs. Bil-Jac Small Breed Dog Food is crafted so that your dog can easily pick it up and chew it. One option is to feed your best friend once a day. Be sure to only put the amount of food in the bowl your dog should eat for the day so you are not allowing him to overeat. In doing so, your best friend can graze, helping him maintain his energy level as needed.

If your dog tends to eat all his food as soon as you put it in the bowl, you may want to consider breaking up the daily amount of food into two meals. This can help your smaller dog maintain energy more evenly. Small dogs that do not eat on a spread-out schedule may be subject to energy level changes throughout the course of a day. Dividing your dogs meals into 2-3 a day will help to spread out the energy the food provides. Be sure to divide the amount of food by the number of times a day you are feeding.

As your dog matures, he needs a food to continue to help support his lifelong health. Some smaller breed dogs may be predisposed to jaw and dental issues, which can become a potential feeding issue, especially as they grow older. Bil-Jac Small Breed Senior is formulated to help your dog lead a mature, active lifestyle in his twilight years. Its easy to chew and has a gentle fiber blend that helps support healthy digestion.

What Makes Bil

Bil-Jac dog food has a big claim to fame about the amount of real chicken they use in their recipes. They proudly display it on most of their packing, proclaiming that a 30-pound bag of dog food contains 25 pounds of chicken. Because of this, Bil Jac doesnt have to add any fats or fillers, and dogs love the taste.

The brands cooking process is also unique. A lot of brands use industrial kitchens to produce large batches of dry food quickly. Bil-Jac cooks all of their food slowly in small batches because its gentler and allows for better quality control.

But its not that simple. If you take an in-depth look at the label and read product reviews, you might have a different idea. What about dried beet pulp? Chicken by product meal? What does a Bil-Jack dog food review say about these things?

Where Does Bil

The Bil-Jac brand is based in the United States but they do not provide specific information about where their ingredients come from. Bil-Jac does say that they use real chicken and real chicken organs as their primary sources of proteins because they believe that your dogs nutrition is optimized when fed a diet where the protein is derived primarily from fresh ingredients.

Bil-Jac also says that they use plenty of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in their products as well as digestible carbohydrates. Part of the Bil-Jac Difference is that the brand takes extra care in sourcing, handling and processing their ingredients, but they dont say exactly where their ingredients come from.
