  • Instead of the store-bought flatbread crust, use regular pizza dough to make a full-size pizza. Store-bought pizza dough or homemade dough will both work well. See these instructions for baking a regular pizza.

How To Make Flatbread Pizza

I prefer to start with precooked flatbread when making pizza, which is why this recipe is so flexible. Remember, you can use store-bought or homemade.

If you are making your own homemade flatbread, you may be wondering why you cant just add the pizza toppings to the flatbread dough.

Well, you can, but after trying it both ways , weve found that we prefer the texture when we add the pizza toppings to cooked flatbread. The bottom of the flatbread gets a little crisp and the middle stays soft.

I also love the fact that since we are calling for cooked flatbread, if you do plan to make your own bread, you can do so a day or two in advance.

To make the pizza, simply lay flatbread out onto a baking sheet and top with your desired pizza toppings. Slide the baking sheet into a 425 degree Fahrenheit oven and bake until the toppings are heated through and if you have added cheese, its bubbly and melted. This usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes.

This recipe will make two pizza crusts. You can either make both at once or you can freeze half for later! Trust me, youll love having pizza dough ready and waiting for you in the freezer.

Youll combine the dough ingredients, let it rise, then separate into two dough balls like usual. Place one of the dough balls in a plastic freezer-safe bag, then store for as long as you need it. I recommend using within six months.

When you know pizza night is coming up, move the dough to the refrigerator and let it thaw overnight. Before baking, take the dough out of the fridge and let it come up to room temperature for an hour. After that, just roll it out, add your toppings, and throw it in the oven!

Do you love Greek salad but always wish that you could throw it on a pizza? If so, this flatbread is perfect. You can make your own Panera copycat, complete with a splash of Greek dressing. While the dish is mostly Mediterranean-inspired, you can enjoy it anytime.

Ingredient Yeast Flatbread Pizza Dough

  • Yeast: You can use instant or active-dry yeast with zero changes. If youre new to working with yeast, I recommend reviewing my Baking with Yeast guide. I used to make flatbread with 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of yeast, but recently reduced it down to 1 teaspoon. This is plenty for a thin flatbread crust. Note that 1 teaspoon is less than 1 standard packet.
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar feeds the yeast. You only need 1 teaspoon.
  • Water: Flatbread and pizza dough are lean doughs, meaning there isnt a lot of fat present. While I make rich overnight cinnamon rolls and glazed doughnuts dough with milk, we dont need that extra fat here. Were aiming for chewy and crisp, not voluptuous and soft.
  • Flour: You can use bread flour or all-purpose flour. Bread flour leaves a slightly chewier texture, but the difference is barely noticeable since the crust is so thin.
  • Olive Oil: Adds flavor. Well also brush the dough with olive oil before baking, too.
  • Salt: Adds flavor.

Optional Additions: You can also add some flair to this dough with a little garlic and/or Italian seasoning. Or add chopped fresh herbs or freshly ground pepper, too.

  • Top with grated cheese, and your choice of veggies. I like cherry tomatoes and yellow bell peppers. Its a great way to get rid of the bits of veggies that you have in your fridge so that they dont do to waste.
  • Sprinkle with more grated cheese, then either microwave it for 2 minutes or bake in the oven for 5 minutes. You can also cook this over the grill, just wait for the cheese to melt.

    I cooked my flatbreads on 11X17 baking sheets. The heavier sheet pans seemed to crisp the crust better than square cookie sheets. The crust is already pre-cooked, so its really a matter of crisping and heating toppings. If you cook all pizzas at once on two racks, rotate the pans from top to bottom halfway through baking for even cooking.

    These can also be grilled in about 8-10 minutes on medium-high heat with the cover down. Just be sure to oil grill grates with olive oil. Lets jump in.

    If you love garlic as much as my family does, you have to try this flatbread recipe. Its full of fresh ingredients, like tomatoes, basil, and arugula, but its rich pesto is also loaded with garlic. You can make your own garlic puree or buy some already made, and you can save so much time by buying naan flatbreads.
