There is an amazing Cuban bakery in LA that I love, Portos Bakery, whose cake inspired my new homemade Tres Leches Cake recipe with fresh berries.

The founder, Rosa, was born in Cuba. The bakerys story said when she was a child, she grew up with the smells of cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla from her mothers baking. It reminds me of my own childhood in Ireland, where my moms baking helped ignite my own passion!

This Homemade Milk NBerries Cake is my take on her wonderful cake, and I think it is the ultimate summer cakeits a delicious sponge cake soaked in a cold, sweet, milky syrup and filled with fresh berries and fluffy whipped cream. Definitely a recipe that is kid-approved!

Tres Leches Cake with Berries- The most delicious recipe for Tres Leches Cake! The cake is soaked in a mixture of three milks making for one of the best desserts you will ever have! The addition of berries makes a fun pop of color and is the perfect dessert to take to parties.

Cinco de Mayo is coming up soon and what better way to celebrate than by enjoying the most delicious Tres Leches Cake ever! If you are unfamiliar with this cake, tres leches means three milks referring to sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream. All you really need to know is these three milks make for the most delicious mixture ever. I could drink this stuff!

The homemade cake is a delicious cake that has the perfect texture for soaking up the tres leche goodness. Its so good and quite simple to make. I topped it with homemade whipping cream and mixed berries. With the pretty blue and red berries on top, this cake makes for a great Patriotic cake as well!

This Tres Leches Cake with Berries is perfect for having a beautiful dessert to feed a crowd! And it can be made the day before if youd like.

The cake is so moist and tastes incredible! Ive made this recipe a couple of times and everyone I shared it with was amazed at how delicious it was!

Can You Freeze Berry Cake

This cake will freeze well, but be cautioned that when it thaws, it may secrete some additional moisture. Thaw it on a second plate.

We loved this cake so much. I was pleasantly surprised that it was exactly the end result I was looking for and even sounds exactly like a similar cake I found that has a serious following: Portos milk and berries cake.

Because of the tres leches syrup, this cake becomes very heavy and dense, but in a really lovely way. The filling is light and airy, full of all of those flavorful fresh berries, and complemented by the light and airy whipped cream.

The soaking syrup gives an enjoyable mouthfeel to every bite, providing each bite of cake a little something extra, and acting almost as a built in fruit dip for the berries.

All of my taste testers were blown away by this cake, and I had a number of DMs on Insta when I shared a photo from the photoshoot.

I have a feeling many of you will be chomping at the bit to make this much like I was.

I hope those of you who do decide to put in the effort to create this delectable summer berry cake are not only proud of yourselves for conquering a slightly-more-challenging-than-easy cake but cant wait for your next bite.

Portos Bake At Home Experience Strudels And Cake

Im really missing some Portos right now I used to frequent the Glendale location for their various strudels, notably their cheese ones. I also remember trying their various cake slices/mini cakes. Pretty good! Portos Bake at Home started a while back where people can order frozen unbaked products and bake them at home. Pretty cool! The Milk Bar strawberry cake wasnt my first cake to arrive frozen, as Portos bake at home MilkN Berries cake was the first.

My Portos Bake at Home Order

  • A dozen guava and cheese strudels A Portos Bakery Original! Puff pastry with Portos signature cream cheese filling and guava jam.
  • An 8MilkN Berries cake A Portos Original! Sponge cake heavily-soaked with Rosas original Tres Leches layered with whipped cream and a blend of blueberry, strawberry, and blackberry. Finished with whipped cream on top.

Ordering and Shipping

The ordering and shipping process was simple. You select a date that you want the items to be delivered by, and it comes frozen with the dry ice and all that good stuff. They recommend that you order the cake 24 hours before the expected serving date to allow time for the cake to thaw.

I got too excited that I didnt take photos of the raw strudels, but oh well enjoy descriptions in the captions!

The Tres Leches Syrup

This syrup is where we get the majority of the sweetness, and why we opted for the whipped cream to cover the cake.

This is a traditional tres leches syrup, made up of evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy whipping cream.

Youll combine the three milks, which, when sufficiently mixed, make a deliciously sweet and smooth soaking syrup that I think is the star of the show in this milk and berry cake.

Allow The Cake To Rest

This cake will need to be refrigerated to set for about 2 hours before you slice it. This resting will allow the liquid to absorb into the cake and for all of the components inside the cake to adhere to each other.

It is much easier to cut, serve, and eat after the rest. I know, its hard to wait But I promise it will be worth it.

I have tried some of their other cakes, but I didnt want to list them since I am not sure if they are not available any longer or only available at certain places. I love Portos cakes and they are a staple to any of our birthdays and celebrations at home. I have tried my fair share over the years, but every time I get one its still just as good as the first time. Something about their bakery-style just feels comforting, if that makes sense. Birthday Portos Tres Leches Cake : Vegan Tres Leches Cake

If you cant find your way to Los Angelos, then this Portos inspired cake will more than do the job! Here is how you make Milk N Berries cake .

  • Make the tres leches cake batter by following my recipe for Easy Tres Leche Cake.
  • Pour this batter between two 8-inch square cake pans and bake for around 30-35 minutes.
  • Mix together the 3 kinds of milk and pour the mixture evenly over the cakes. Cover and allow to soak overnight.
  • The next day, whip the cream to stiff peaks.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the berries.
  • Place one layer over the cake on a serving plate and drizzle on any liquid left in the pan.
  • Spread some of the whipped cream over the cake and cover it with half of the berries. Then, carefully place the second cake layer on top. Spread another dollop of whipped cream on the second layer and the sides of the cake. You want it to look rustic, a naked cake look.
  • Top the cake with the rest of the berries and serve it immediately or chill for no longer than 4 hours until ready to serve!

    As I sit here writing this article about one of Los Angeless most popular bakery, Im mentally making a note of what I want to order at Portos next time I go there, which is probably tomorrow.

    I was first introduced to those delicious cheese rolls and potatoes ball from Portos almost 10 years ago when a friend bought some on our road trip from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon.

    Gemmas Pro Chef Tips For Making A Milk N Berries Cake

    • My Tres Leches Cake is usually baked in a 9×13-inch pan, and if you prefer, you can still make the cake in that pan. When ready to assemble, cut the cake in half to make a smaller rectangle-shaped layer cake.
    • You can use different berries or other fruit: as long as you stick with the same proportions. Diced stone fruits would be as lovely as berries!
    • Try this as a trifle: cut the tres leches cake into cubes and then, in a trifle bowl, layer half the cake, half the whipped cream, and half the berries. Repeat to get two layers!
    • This cake is a kid favorite, but for a slightly sophisticated twist, toss the berries with 2 tablespoons of Grand Marnier, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 2 teaspoons of orange zest before using to layer your cake.
    • The whipped cream isnt sweetened in this recipe as the cake is already quite sweet, but if you prefer, you can make it sweet by adding 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract to the cream before you whip it!

    There are a few items I ALWAYS get from Portos… the milk and berriescake, potato balls, guava strudels, coconut strudels, and cheese rolls. Honestly, you can’t really go wrong with anything from the bakery. I also really like their sandwiches.On the weekend, I highly recommend you order online and pick up. The line gets extremely long so it definitely saves a lot of time if you order ahead of time online.

    How To Assemble This Milk & Berries Cake

    Cake in a milk box – biscuits and strawberries. Everyone thought that I bought it!

    The assembly of this cake is where youll need your patience, but I assure you, you can totally do this.

    Youll start by placing your bottom layer on a plate. Do not use a cake stand.

    Youll want to put this plate on another larger plate or large baking sheet, because some of the tres leches syrup will seep out .

    Poke holes in the cake, then slowly pour about ¾ cup of the tres leches syrup evenly onto the cake.

    Allow about 10 minutes for it to fully soak in, then add your whipped cream and berries filling.

    Yes, this filling is lumpy, but youll be able to shape it with a spatula to be as flat as you can make it.

    Youll also want to keep about ½ border around the filling so that there are no berries sticking out, which will make it easier to cover the cake with the whipped cream.

    After you have your berry filling in, top with the second cake layer.

    And yep, you guessed it, poke more holes.

    At this point, your cake is ready to take on the bulk of the tres leches syrup, but remember, practice patience.

    Pour a little on, wait a couple minutes, pour on some more, then repeat. It will be fairly apparent when your cake is unable to take on more syrup, and thats when youll want to stop.

    I used almost all of my tres leches syrup before my cake told me enough was enough.

    Once youre happy with the amount of liquid youve added, allow the cake to sit for about 15 minutes, then remove any excess liquid at the base of the cake.
