For nearly 20 years – in 100 bakeries in 22 states – Nothing Bundt Cakes has had customers falling in love again with the bundt cake.
For those old enough to remember, the bundt cake is a nostalgic sweet escape back to the 1970s. Now, that round-shaped cake with a hole in the center is introducing itself to new generations of foodies.
At Thursday mornings ribbon cutting for the new specialty bakery shop at 6025 Crenshaw Rd., dozens of bundt cakes of all sizes sitting on the various counter displays made it tough for customers to decide: red velvet, lemon, white chocolate raspberry, carrot cake, chocolate turtle.
Its different from a cupcake or a pastry shop, its just unique and were really excited to bring it to Pasadena, said Dalinda Madrigal, who co-owns the Pasadena shop with her cousin, Brittany Pequeno.
The Las Vegas-based Nothing Bundt Cakes was founded by life-long friends and housewives, Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz in 1997.
Madrigal and Pequeno came to Nothing Bundt Cakes as owners with the same passion for offering something different to customers.
Madrigal is a State Farm agent in Pasadena, and would buy the cakes from other shops for client. When the opportunity came to open and operate a franchise location in Pasadena, the timing couldnt have been more perfect, she said.

Mona and Jack Gabriel retired three years ago. But like many other retirees, they soon began looking for something else to do.
The Tyler, Texas, couple are now the owners of three Nothing Bundt Cakes stores, with the latest opening March 14 in the Regal Court Shopping Center in Shreveport. The first was in Tyler in August 2013, followed in January 2014 in Jackson-Flowood, Miss.
So far, the response to the ready-made bundt cakes has been âexcellent,â Mona Gabriel said.
Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz started the Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise in 1997 after perfecting a recipe that became a hit at gatherings of family and friends.
Jack Gabrielâs father was a baker in the military, and the coupleâs love of baking and entertaining fit right in with the Nothing Bundt Cakes brand.
âItâs a good cake moist with cream cheese frosting. Itâs just a good cake,â Mona Gabriel said.
Fresh eggs, butter and real cream cheese are the essential ingredients of the cakes, which are made daily and in different sizes.
âEverything is made from scratch, real scratch,â Jack Gabriel said.
Customers can find nine consistent flavors chocolate chocolate chip, red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, lemon, carrot, cinnamon swirl, marble, white chocolate and pecan praline. A tenth flavor of the month rotates.
The cakes are becoming popular as a non-traditional wedding cake. The different sizes make them perfect for positioning in tiers then adding the bite-sized bundtinis on the side.

On Thursday, September 1, the company is giving out free mini bundt cakes to the first 250 customers at locations across North America to celebrate its 25th birthday. Each of those recipients will receive an individually packaged Confetti Bundtlet, the bakery chain said.
There will also be an online contest offering a grand prize of a $25,000 birthday party. Twenty-five runners-up will receive a $100 Nothing Bundt Cakes gift card.
Fans can enter from Sept. 125 and sharing what winning would mean to them.
