The Name Of The Supper

I am the Bread of Life – Jesus Christ

Holy Communion, also referred to as the Lord’s Supper, is something that is done in order to remember what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did for us while he was hanging on the cross. The cup represents the blood that was shed by Jesus during His crucifixion, and the bread represents the body of Jesus that was scourged and broken before and during His crucifixion.

According to the text, who is not required to take part in Holy Communion? The Christian practice of seeking union with Jesus Christ through the celebration of the Eucharist is known as spiritual communion. It is also utilized by individuals who are unable to take part in Holy Communion as a means of preparation for Mass.

Why do we take the time to attend the Lord’s supper? Why do we take the time to participate in the Lord’s Supper? We observe in order to remember something that happened in the past, to look forward to something that will happen in the future, and to take part in the celebration of life that occurs in between these two events.

The Living Bread From Heaven

Jesus said that He was the bread of life, and that he who eats of it will live forever. What does that mean in practice?

I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever John 6:48-51.

The Jews quarreled among themselves and wondered how this could be. They knew of the manna that their fathers ate and received from heaven, but not this new heavenly bread that Jesus spoke of. What does it mean to eat the bread of life the living bread from heaven?

Bread Of Life In The Old Testament

The idea of bread as a symbol of God’s provision and life was a well-developed concept in the Old Testament. Early on, when God established the wilderness tabernacle for worship among the people of Israel, he gave instructions to build a table called “the table of the showbread.” Every Sabbath, the priests of the tabernacle would arrange twelve loaves of bread called “the bread of the presence” on the table near God’s presence in the holy place .

This presentation of the bread symbolized God’s eternal, covenant relationship with his people and his constant care and provision for the tribes of Israel, represented by the twelve loaves of bread. When Jesus preached his sermon about being the Bread of Life, discerning Jews in the crowd would have connected the dots to this long-practiced aspect of their worship.

God also provided manna in the wildernessa miraculous daily provision of food sent from heavento save the Jews from dying of starvation in the desert. Unlike the Bread of Life that Jesus offered in John 6, manna was food that spoiled by the end of the day:

Then Moses told them, “Do not keep any of it until morning.” But some of them didn’t listen and kept some of it until morning. But by then it was full of maggots and had a terrible smell. Moses was very angry with them. After this the people gathered the food morning by morning, each family according to its need. And as the sun became hot, the flakes they had not picked up melted and disappeared.

Eat Trust Love Delight

The last phrase, we will end within the beginning of verse 27 is: Do not labor for the food that perishes. What I have been talking about is labor for the food that endures to eternal life. And I have said that means believe in him. Eat. Trust. Love. Delight. Enjoy. It is free. And now he says, the beginning part of the verse: Do not labor for the food that perishes.

When you eat of the bread of life two things change. You get eternal life, that is, a new chapter is added to your life. Angola is not the last chapter. It is the next to the last chapter. Eternity is the last chapter. And it lasts forever and is infinitely happy.

So many Americans work their fingers to the bone to have twenty years of so-called retirement thinking retirement is the last chapter. It isnt. It is the next to the last chapter.

This life is very short, brothers, very short. It may seem long, but it is short. And eternity, it is really long. It is really long and it is really long and it is really good, ten thousand times will you be rewarded for every kind deed you ever do, every act of faith that ever comes forth from you.

My closing admonition, brothers, is: it is free. Christ died in our place. He rose again from the dead. He lived a life of perfect righteousness. He stands freely available to everyone who will have him and stop working for him and start eating the bread of heaven and finding him to be more precious.

Jesus The Bread Of Life

Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst .

God told Moses to have the table for the bread of the Presence built for the tabernacle and stacked with twelve loaves as a way to remind Israel of His gracious provision for all their needs . For the most part, only the priests could eat this bread, though in exceptional circumstances it could be given to those in dire straits . Yet whoever ate this bread found that while it could sustain life for a time, it could not make anyone live forever. Israel needed a different type of food to find eternal life.

This bread, we see in todays passage, is Christ Jesus Himself. The Lord has just fed the 5,000 with only five barley loaves and two fish , prompting the crowd to seek Him out that they might receive more food . Jesus responds that the people ought not to look for temporary food like bread that perishes but for the food that lasts forever, the food that God has commissioned the Son of Man to give to His people . At this point the crowd asks what works they must do to get this bread , which reflects the Jewish belief that the Law is the bread that God gives. They are asking about the works of the Mosaic law they must do to find eternal life.

Then Jesus Declared I Am The Bread Of Life Whoever Comes To Me Will Never Go Hungry And Whoever Believes In Me Will Never Be Thirsty

God is our Provider, and Jesus is the Bread of Life. John recorded Jesus promise that all who freely accept this bread will no longer hunger. The first of the I am statements of Jesus, which solidify His nature as fully God and fully man is I am the bread of life, which describes the way we find full satisfaction in and through Christ alone.

God is the supplier of divine bread, explains the NIV Commentary, and whoever eats of it will live forever. Every word Jesus spoke on earth carried precise weight and meaning. This important note of Scripture defines our need to trust the Living Word to satisfy our physical bodies, heart and soul.

What Does God Say About Bread

It is found in the Lords Prayer: Give us this day our daily bread. This Christian prayer is a request for both actual and spiritual food. Bread is also a gift from God: when Moses fed his people in the desert with food which fell from heaven, and during the last supper, when bread became the body of Christ.

Which Word Can Best Describe The Staff Of Life

What does the word ” stay ” mean? The staff of life, to be specific. Bread occasionally, by extension, any food that is necessary to survive. Bible verses such as Isaiah 3:1 describe a “stay” as “the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread.” It is not surprising that the Bible is the source of this term.

Why Would Jesus Use The Analogy Of Bread For Himself

Jesus spoke in terms, parables, and analogies most could understand. Especially in the light of Passover, He knew the Jewish leaders and Gods people would understand His reference to bread. Their understanding of exactly what He meant, however, was divinely appointed. Through the relation of hunger, a physical need, Jesus explained the recalculation of our every desire -not just for physical food but spiritual – to be satisfied in Him.

The Israelites in the desert were required to trust God daily for manna, their literal daily bread. Jesus is imploring believers to put full confidence in Him, trusting He will provide wisdom that leads to true satisfaction. He is the only way to the Father.

Jesus earthly life was dedicated to executing the will of His Father. Paul wrote to the Philippians, have the same mindset as Christ, who: being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His advantage . Christ took on human skin and was crucified to eliminate the separation between God and His people. The NIV Application Commentary explains, the idea is not about Jesus welcoming people, but about Jesus welcoming people whom the Father has given into his care.

They Murmur And Demand

John 6:41 The Jews then murmured at Him 42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he says, I came down from Heaven?

We know who you are. How can you say you are from heaven, and we should believe it?

Jesus intended to expose their error. He meant to point out to them that a sign could not point out His nature, God in the flesh. No human on their own can come to that place. The Holy Spirit must help get you there then, you must choose to believe.

John 6:44 No man can come to Me unless the Father who has sent Me draw him and I will raise him up at the Last Day.

The natural inability of man to come to Christ is not physical nor intellectual, but moral and spiritual it is an unwillingness. No change of mental organization, no new faculty is required, but a radical change of the heart and will. This is effected by the Holy Spirit, but the providential drawing of the Father prepares the way for it.

Here is the great paradox, a mystery of the Bible: the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of a man

The Father draws, but anyone who wants to, can come. Divine love and Divine Grace are difficult for us to understand.

The Barrier Of Unbelief

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the Bread of Life. He that comes to Me shall never hunger, and he that believes in Me shall never thirst. 36 But I said unto you that you also have seen Me, and believe not.

They have already seen Him in a Messianic function at the feeding, and yet did not see the sign in His miracle, and so they did not truly see Him. They were so near salvation, but they lacked faith. They see the Son of God in His glory, and yet do not believe in Him.

Jesus Is The Bread Of Life

Every three years in the lectionary cycle of readings, we hear, on five consecutive Sundays, readings from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of Saint John. We begin this Sunday, July 29th, with the first fifteen verses of John 6, the account of the multiplication of the loaves and fish. Then, on the next four Sundays of August, we will hear the great discourse of Jesus in the synagogue of Capernaum in which Our Lord reveals himself as the Bread of Life.

Saint Augustine taught that The New Testament is hidden in the Old and the Old is made manifest in the New. We see this in John, chapter six. This Sundays first reading from the second book of Kings, like this Sundays Gospel, describes a hungry crowd, someone bringing forth barley loaves, and another objecting that the bread is too little for the large crowd. In both accounts, all the people were able to eat their fill there was a multiplication of the loaves and there was bread left over.

The Old Testament reading features Elisha as the prophet who performs the miracle. Of course, it is Jesus in the New Testament who multiplies the loaves and the fish. There are several other miracles performed by Elisha that are also akin to the later miracles of Jesus. Elisha the prophet prefigures Jesus. The New Testament is hidden in the Old and the Old is made manifest in the new.
