My recipe is simple to make, and extra delicious with a crunchy, sweet sugar topping, which I think is the best part!

If you dont want to spend time roasting the potatoes, you can easily make your pie with canned sweet potatoes instead. Either way, this recipe wont disappoint! All you need are a few basic ingredients and a pre-made pie crust, which can be homemade or store-bought.

Meaty Filling Plus Creamy Topping Equals Best Dinner Ever

I love a hearty dish, and this is like the best meat and potatoes you ever ate. I use a mix of sweet potatoes and regular ol white potatoes for the topping, but feel free to use just one or the other.

  • large stalk celery, chopped

    large carrots, chopped

  • teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • cups low sodium beef stock

  • 2
  • large white potato , peeled and cut into ½-inch cubes

  • 1

    large sweet potato , peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

  • ¼

    cup unsalted butter

  • ½
  • teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • Special Equipment: 6 large ramekins

  • Make the Meat Filling: Heat a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, using a wooden spoon to break it up, until the meat is browned through and no longer pink. Transfer the meat and any juices to a bowl.

  • Add 2 tablespoons of the olive oil to the pan, then add the onion, celery, and carrots and cook until the onions start to soften, about 7 minutes. Add the garlic, coriander, salt, pepper, and cayenne to the pot and cook, stirring, until fragrant, 1-2 minutes. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Return meat and any juices to the pot, then add in the beef stock, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer over low heat until the liquid thickens, 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the peas.

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Pour a scant cup of the meat mixture into each of 6 large then spoon over a scant ¾ cup of the potato mixture to fully cover the meat.

    How to make an old fashioned southern sweet potato pie that
    • Sweet potatoes. Use about 2 medium sweet potatoes, or 1 lb . You can either roast them , boil or steam them.
    • Brown sugar. You can use either light or dark brown sugar . Do not try to substitute with granulated sugar in this recipe, it will change both the texture and the flavor of the custard.
    • Eggs. They make a perfect custard-like texture.
    • Butter. Use it unsalted to control the salt, and softened at room temperature .
    • Heavy cream. You can replace it with whole milk too.
    • Flour. You need just one Tablespoon of flour to act as a thickening agent in the filling.
    • Vanilla extract. It brings some warm notes and is a must for a boost of flavors in the recipe.
    • Spices. I used cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, ginger, as you would do for a pumpkin pie.
    • Salt. It brings out the spice flavors!
    • Homemade pie crust. I used my all butter pie crust. Simple and straightforward.

    You dont have to use suet pastry, but then you wont get the lovely soaked up gravy and suet combination. You could top the pie with puff pastry instead.

    Crispy Potato Fritters Fabrication :

    In making crispy potato fritters First of all, peel the skin of 4 small potatoes and cut them into 3-4 parts. Put it in a deep saucepan. Pour enough water to cover them and boil them until they are soft.

    Drain the boiled potatoes and put them in a deep bowl. While it is hot, add 1 glass of grated cheddar cheese, 1 tablespoon of butter, salt to your taste, black pepper and red cayenne pepper. Mash the potato mortar thoroughly with the help of a puree masher or fork.

    On the other side, melt 200 g of butter in a small pan. Lay one of the phyllo on the counter. Spread a generous amount of melted butter on the dough. Fold the dough in half in a D shape and spread butter on this part you folded.

    Put the potato dough on the long side of the dough. Do not fill the inner mortar too much so that it does not overflow during cooking. Fold the edges of the dough 1 finger inward. Roll it up without tightening too much. Cut the wrapped pastry with the help of a knife in a diagonal shape, 3-4 finger widths. Do the same for the other 2 phyllo dough.

    Place the cut pastries on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Spread a generous amount of melted butter on them. Then sprinkle with sesame or black cumin seeds. Put in a preheated 180 degree oven. Bake for about 30 minutes until they are browned.

    Crispy Potato PieAfter they are cooked, you can take them out of the oven and serve them hot or warm.

    • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
    • 3 cups mashed white potatoes

    • Over Baking: Over baking a pie is the most common cause of cracking. Be sure to remove your pie from the oven once a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
    • Cooking Prematurely: Its important that your oven is at 350°F when you put in your pie. If its still too hot from roasting the potatoes or not fully preheated, itll disrupt the baking process and may cause cracking.
    • Placement in the Oven: Its generally a good idea to cook this pie on a lower rack in your oven. This is because the oven tends to be hotter at the top. However, everyones oven is different, so cook your pie according to what works best for your setup.
    • Total Time:1 hour 55 minutes

    How To Make It

    It’s as uncomplicated as it gets: Pour the hash browns into the pie crust, season it, and then bake it for 20 minutes. Don’t bother to form the crust beforehand, as the potatoes need that first 20 minutes to par-cook.

    After the first 20 minutes, remove from oven. At this point, you’ll form the pie crust, but remember… don’t use your hands, as the plate will be scorching from the oven. Using a spoon, carefully form the pie crust by pushing the potatoes up the sides of the pie plate to form the edges. Next, press down the potatoes on the bottom of the pie plate.

    Then, return to the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fully cooked through. The crust will be crispy on the edges of the pie.

    The pie crust is now ready to to use in your desired filling. It can sit for 1 day at room temperature, covered, before use.

    If you want to freeze the unbaked pie, my advice would be to assemble the pie in a large disposable aluminium pie dish. That way your baking dish can remain in your cupboard .

    Just wrap the cooled assembled pie in a layer of tinfoil and cover with one or two layers of plastic cling film before freezing.

    You can freeze this pie for up to 3 months.

    To use, remove from the freezer and allow to defrost in the refrigerator then bake according to the recipe instructions.

    Alternatively, you could just freeze the cooled filling. When you are ready to make the pie, defrost the filling in the refrigerator, pour into a pie dish, cover with pastry and bake according to the recipe instructions.
