I am the Bread of Life – Jesus Christ

Today, we are painting with the color purple. What does the color purple mean to you, or what do you associate with the color purple?

Throughout history, the color purple has often been associated with kings, queens and other very rich people. Kings and emperors dressed in purple clothing to display their importance because purple dye was quite expensive. Only the wealthy could afford to have clothes dyed with purple. So, purple as a color represents abundancehaving plenty of everything, including food so that your hunger was being satisfied.

1. Consider the word satisfied. What does it mean to be satisfied?

2. Give examples of feeling satisfied because of having abundance.

One day Jesus saw a huge crowd of people coming towards Him as He was teaching. He knew they would be hungry so His disciples found a boy with 5 small loaves of bread and 2 small fish. Thats all Jesus needed to feed the crowd of more than 5000. Do you remember what happened?

3. Read John 6:5-15. If you were a reporter, what parts of this event would really stand out to you so that you would write about it?

Did you notice that Jesus fed every one of those people as much as they wanted to eat so that they were satisfied? For that day, at least.

4. Read John 6:25-34.

  • When they asked Jesus what works they must do to please God , how did Jesus answer?
  • What kind of bread were the people thinking Jesus was offering to them ?

5. Read John 6:35. How did Jesus answer them?

7. Reread John 6:35.

Jesus Will Be There For You

Later that evening, the disciples get in a boat and head for Capernaum on the west side of the sea, leaving Jesus behind. The people see them go, but dont know where Jesus is. When a great wind threatens the disciples on the sea about three miles out in the lake, Jesus comes to them walking on the water. They are frightened, but he identifies himself, and they joyfully take him in the boat.

Jesus will be there for you. Nothing can stop him. And what he gives is above all is himself.

And I argued that having Jesus in the boat with them was the end of that story within the story, because John was really making the same point as with the twelve leftover baskets. Jesus will do whatever it takes to be there for us in our troubles. He may seem as distant and as inaccessible as a well-meaning, helpless friend on shore while you are about to drown three miles out to sea. But there is a difference. He makes bread out of nothing, and Jesus walks on water. He will be there for you. Nothing can stop him. And what he gives is above all is himself.

‘i Am The Bread Of Life’

  • Throughout the Bible, bread is a symbolic representation of God’s life-sustaining provision.
  • When Jesus told the hungry crowds that he was the Bread of Life, he was teaching his followers that He alone was their true source of spiritual life, both in this present world and in the everlasting life to come.
  • The Bread of Life that Jesus represents never perishes, spoils, or runs out.

A Public And Personal Message

But, first, lets get the setting clearly in mind. The day before, in verses 115, Jesus had crossed to the eastern side of Sea of Galilee and fed over five thousand people with five barley loaves and a few fish. It was a sign that pointed to himself as the Bread of Life.

  • Verse 35: I am the bread of life whoever comes to me shall not hunger.

  • Verse 41: I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  • Verse 48: I am the bread of life.

  • Verse 51: I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.

  • Verse 55: My flesh is true food.

Thats what the miracle of the loaves and fishes was pointing to. It was also pointing very specifically to the fact that Jesus will always be there for his disciples to take care of them personally. He shows this by seeing to it that twelve full baskets are left over one for each apostle. So the miracle had a public message for all, and a personal lesson for the apostles.

Bread of Life

In John 6, Jesus fed a large crowdfar more than 5,000 peoplewith just five loaves of barley bread and two fish . This miracle astounded the people who declared that Jesus was a great prophetthe one they had been expecting. But when Jesus saw that the people wanted to force him to be their king, he quietly slipped away to be alone in the hills.

The next day the crowds went in search of Jesus, not because they had understood his miracle, but because he had filled their appetites. The people were caught up in the day to day treadmill of getting their needs met and providing food for their hungry bellies. But Jesus was concerned with saving their souls. He told them, “Don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you” .

Lesson: Believing in Jesus Christ as the source of our spiritual existence is how we gain eternal life . When we put our faith in him, he gives us spiritual bread that will not spoil and abundant life that will never end.

Jesus wanted the people to comprehend who he was: “The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” . Again, the crowd asked for a miraculous sign, like when Moses gave the people manna to eat in the wilderness.

Only those whose spiritual hearts had been opened could comprehend that to eat Christ’s flesh and drink his blood meant to grasp by faith the significance of Jesus’ death on the cross.

What Is The Bread Of Life

Bread is one of the essential foods of many cultures all around the world it is a staple in many diets, and for centuries it would have been one of the most accessible foods for people of all wealth and social statuses.

At that point in history, especially in Jesus culture, bread would have been understood as a nutritional necessity. It also has historical significance for the Jewish people, harkening back to Gods life-sustaining manna, which kept their people alive in the desert. Jesus chose bread as His metaphor intentionally.

Salvation and a relationship with the Lord are not like a sweet treat not necessary but enjoyable. It is not like meat, which one can survive without but is important to a well-rounded diet in many circumstances.

Salvation is essential to human existence and necessary for eternity. When Jesus says He is the bread of life, He is saying He is essential.

Just as God the Father provided nourishment, He was providing a path to redemption for mankind, separated from Him by sin, through Jesus Christ. The Lord underscores that He is the way to this redemption by foreshadowing the crucifixion. Without the crucifixion and the resurrection, the sins of the world remain unpaid, and mankind remains under the law.

In the context of the events of John 6, Jesus was telling the crowd to follow Him to the crucifixion and resurrection, to believe in the promised redemption.

A Feast When All Else Fails

You wont be driven by upward mobility, or big pay, or positions of power, or lust for weekends, or passion for retirement. He will be a feast for you when everything else fails.

And you will have before you not the fragile hope for a few years of aged retirement, but the absolute certainty of the everlasting cabin by the lake with Jesus. And you wont be too old to enjoy it. Youll be young forever. And the everlasting ocean cruise with Jesus. And the everlasting evening by the fire with a good book and Jesus. And the fact that you dont need to have that now because you know you will have it forever changes everything.

In summary:

  • God put his seal on Jesus, the Son of Man, as the Mediator of eternal life.

  • Jesus offers himself to us freely as the food that endures to eternal life and no amount of working for God can make you see him as a feast. He is free. He did the work on the cross. All we can do is eat, that is, believe, and live.

  • And when we eat, two things change: A new chapter is added to our lives, eternity. And a new Treasure dominates our heart, Jesus. And that changes everything.

Then Jesus Declared I Am The Bread Of Life Whoever Comes To Me Will Never Go Hungry And Whoever Believes In Me Will Never Be Thirsty

The Sermon | Jesus Is the Bread of Life | Sermon on John 6:22â59

God is our Provider, and Jesus is the Bread of Life. John recorded Jesus promise that all who freely accept this bread will no longer hunger. The first of the I am statements of Jesus, which solidify His nature as fully God and fully man is I am the bread of life, which describes the way we find full satisfaction in and through Christ alone.

God is the supplier of divine bread, explains the NIV Commentary, and whoever eats of it will live forever. Every word Jesus spoke on earth carried precise weight and meaning. This important note of Scripture defines our need to trust the Living Word to satisfy our physical bodies, heart and soul.

Breaking Down The Key Parts Of John : 35

#1 Then Jesus declared, Upon hearing the request, Siralways give us this bread, Jesus made his statement. It seems as though the point of feeding the masses the day before was to lead up to this powerful, and life-giving statement.

#2 I am the bread of life. Jesus is the life-giving sustenance that we need if we are to live and not die. There may be intentionality in his beginning the declaration with, I am. Jesus is God the Son, one and equal with the I Am, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. Like bread, he is a fundamentally important means of life, and he is the energy for existence. All things exist in him, and for him, and through him .

#3 Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, Jesus told the disciples in John 4:34, My foodis to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. To obey God, seeking first his kingdom, his righteousness, and carrying out his will for us, trusting him to provide for our daily needs will fill us in a way that is more satisfying than physical food, as we cultivate a deep and loving relationship with the one who created us for himself and for his glory.

#4 and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Streams of living water were what Jesus promised to those who follow him. The Holy Spirit would be poured out as a river of life that can empower the believer for ministry and life, and even more so can raise the dead to live forever on the banks of the heavenly river of life that heals the nations .

Working With Zeal Excellence And Joy

So you go to work now, not dominated by the desire for the bread that perishes of for the fear of losing it. You go to work knowing him, trusting him, treasuring him, being satisfied in him, with your heart set on making much of him in every aspect of your vocation.

Jesus will be a feast for you when everything else fails.

Keeping eternal life before you, and snacking all day on the Bread of Life, wont make you a lazy worker. It wont make you a shoddy worker. It wont make you a gloomy worker. You will bring zeal and excellence and joy to your work because you know him, you trust him, you treasure him, you aim to make much of him. And you know that everything you do in his name and for his glory from washing the bathroom to running the boardroom will be rewarded forever and ever in the new earth.

Bread Of Life Discourse

The Bread of Life Discourse is a portion of the teaching of Jesus which appears in chapter 6 of John’s Gospel /John#6:22″ rel=”nofollow”> verses 2259) and was delivered in the synagogue at Capernaum.

The title “Bread of Life” given to Jesus is based on this Biblical passage which is set in the Gospel of John shortly after the feeding the multitude episode , after which he walks on the water to the western side of Sea of Galilee and the crowd follow by boat in search of Him.

How Is Jesus The Bread Of Life

One of the themes in the Book of John is who Jesus is, and not just what He did. The Apostle John opens his account with an explanation of Jesus deity. In chapter six, he focuses on one of Lords miracles, and its fallout. Because the Lord performed miracles of healing and taught the Scriptures with authority, there would sometimes be throngs following him.

In one of these instances, the Lord takes five loaves of bread and two fish and feeds thousands of people with it, with twelve baskets leftover. That night, He walks on water. The next day, those same thousands gather again to be fed. Jesus then offers them salvation eternal nourishment rather than just temporary sustenance.

Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal… For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day .

The Lord presents His miracle as an opening act. In this life, mankind must toil and labor for food that only temporarily nourishes the body, which will eventually die. He had the power and authority to multiply that food and could do so much more.
