Cake & Spoon: Buttermilk Pie

The Best Pecan Pie

3008 Gonzales St.

It might not seem possible for something to be both incredibly traditional and totally unique, but Cake & Spoon proves that it is. This bakery serves classic, but hard-to-find, savory hand pies like English Sausage Rolls, and they whip up a sweet Southern pie youve probably never heard of, but your grandma definitely has: Buttermilk Pie.

This dish is similar to a custard pie or chess pie, but instead of being made with cream, its made with tangy buttermilk. That tanginess provides a brighter flavor that keeps this pie from following the fate of many custard pies, which can be too sweet and too plain. Imagine the silky texture of a custard pie combined with mild tang of a cheesecake, and youre starting to get the picture of Buttermilk Pie.

If you want to get a taste of this pie, you might have to go a little out of your way. Cake & Spoon doesnt actually have a shop you can visit, but they currently offer curbside pickup at their East Austin kitchen on Gonzales Street if you order ahead of time. You can also pick up their pies at one of Austins best BBQ restaurants, Franklin Barbecue, from Tuesday to Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Or, you can stop by the SFC Farmers Market in Downtown Austin or the Texas Farmers Market in Lakeline on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. You can also find some of their baked goods at Royal Blue Grocery stores around the city.

Papis Pies: Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

10 Chisholm Trail Rd.

Located in Round Rock, this casual restaurant serves cafe-style eats like quiche and sandwiches, along with their show-stopping selection of pies. Our favorite is the Strawberry Rhubarb, but the Bourbon Pecan is a close second.

The Strawberry Rhubarb Pie is a summer season staple. The sweet strawberries contrast with the tart rhubarb, and the buttery pie crust adds richness to this otherwise light pie. And if it tastes light and bright, that means we can eat as much as we want, right?

Youll find us in the corner devouring a whole pan of Papis Strawberry Rhubarb Pie.

Waltons Fancy And Staple

Waltons, which has been in Austin since 1969, makes one type of pie a day, and they serve it until it runs out. Get there early to make sure you get a slice!

Although I do love their pie and a trip for that alone is worthwhile, I would encourage you to plan a lunch visit here. This space is so lovely, and the deli dishes up amazing breakfast plates and some of the best sandwiches in town. I hear dinner is in the works, too!

609 W 6th St, Austin, TX 78701.

Wishing you the very happiest Thanksgiving, friends! Nate and I are spending it up in Dallas with my side of the family. Im currently baking up a storm in the kitchen This is my favorite holiday!

Review Of Roaring Fork

Good for:Dining options:Dining style:Amazing Pecan Pie

We had planned to eat here based on previous reviews and were pleased that it was next to our hotel. We ordered the petit filet and a bottle of red wine both were superb. The only disappointment was the French fries, which tasted as if the fat in the fryer needed changing, so we left those. I’m glad we did, as this meant we had room for the Pecan Pie – served with Amy’s ice cream the portion was a good size, enough for us to share. The restaurant was busy and had a good atmosphere. Service was friendly and not too fussy. Overall, a very good experience which lived up to the reviews.

This was the best meal I had in Austin. We were part of a large group and the servers were great at keeping pace with drink orders and revisions of overcooked steaks. Everyone, whether they had fish, pork or beef was happy with their dish. The place was jam packed and seemed to be a hopping place for business professionals and a higher end crowd.

Quacks 43rd Street Bakery: Coconut Cream Pie

5 Places That Serve Outstanding Pecan Pie in Austin

411 E 43rd St.

Quacks 43rd St Bakery always makes our shortlist of the best bakeries in Austin. And anyone who disagrees might be a quack or maybe they just havent tried the Coconut Cream Pie.

With specialty pastries of all kinds , this bakery knows how to pull off a flaky pastry. Their pie crust is rich and buttery, and always perfectly golden brown.

The filling in their coconut cream pie is silky smooth, which makes this one of the best pies in Austin if you want to eat it, and the best pie in Austin if you want to pie someone in the face.

Upper Crust Bakery: Dutch Apple Pie

4508 Burnet Rd.

This traditional bakery uses simple ingredients with no preservatives or dough conditioners. But the preservative-free pastry crust isnt the only thing that makes the Dutch Apple Pie extra special.

This recipe uses Granny Smith apples with a touch of cinnamon and sugar for a sweet-tart flavor combo that has more depth than a traditional apple pie. And instead of layering more pie crust on top, this apple pie is topped with a traditional dutch crumble topping, similar to what youd see on a cobbler.

The crumble adds a more delicious buttery flavor and an additional texture thats similar to a biscuit or scone all this leads to a richer mouth feel that automatically makes you go Mmm At least, thats how it works for us.

There are few things more quintessential in the Austin food scene than food trucks and Bananarchy is one of my favorites! I love this unique but totally delicious concept of frozen bananas coated with a dip and rolled in toppings! My favorite specialty banana is the Texas Two-Step- a chocolate-dipped banana topped with pecans, toffee, cinnamon, and a peanut butter drizzle. Its the perfect treat for the hot Texas heat.

Tiny Pies: Sweet Texaspecan Pie

5035 Burnet Rd.

Bite-size or otherwise, Tiny Pies makes some of the best dessert in Austin. Its our go-to for a traditional Texaspecan pie.

Their version of this southern staple has a well-balanced flavor full of rich, nutty notes and without the cloying sweetness of some pecan pies. This choice has even received state-wide recognition, voted one of the 10 best pecan pies in the entire Lone Star State.

You can get their Sweet Texas Pecan in a tiny-size or full-size pie, depending on which option works best for your diet: Option A) Of course I ate six of them theyre tiny! or Option B) I only had one slice of pie!*Half the pie is gone.*

You dont have to live in Austin to enjoy Hayleycakes and cookies but trust me when I tell you theyre just as delicious as they are gorgeous! Hop over to their page and be blown away by Hayleys decorating skills, and in the meantime stop by their Austin location near Lake Travis.

Probably the first dessert I was ever aware of in Austin were the insane donuts from Gourdoughs. This food truck and brick & mortar business sells some of the most insane and enormous donuts youll ever see in your life. Theyre a great dessert option if youre looking for something completely glutenous and indulgent. One of my favorite donuts to order is Grannys Pie- a homemade donut topped with caramel, pecans, bananas & graham cracker. The more Ive been to Gourdoughs, however, the more partial I am to something simple and sweet like the Naughty & Nice- a homemade donut topped with sugar and cinnamon.

I will never pass up an opportunity for fresh, hot, and delicious mini donuts and Little Lucys is no exception! Little Lucys is located right on Rainey Street in downtown Austin. I love how truly light and fluffy these hot donuts are. The first time we went here I completely made the mistake of sharing with my husband. There are so many inventive donut flavors but we recommend trying cinnamon sugar topped donuts with caramel or chocolate dipping sauce on the side!

Review Of Franklin Barbecue

This is my #2 BBQ spot and you come here for the pork. They have the best pork ribs and the best pulled pork in the world! The only reason I do not mention the beef items is because I prefer La Barbecue for those, but if you are here do not skip out…get a little bit of everything. DO NOT forget the pecan pie…best pie I have ever tried. So much so the best that you have to wait about 3 hours, but it is worth every single second.

So, on vacation with 3 friends and everyone we spoke to advised us to go here and try the barbecue! We were aware there was a long wait. Got there around 9:45 and the line was out into the car park! We waited for around 3 hours, by the time we got to the front my hunger had gone and I was in a bit of a bad mood… I sort of wanted the food to be average! However then we ordered and finally got to tuck in, and WOW. The best barbecue food I’ve ever had, the meat on the ribs just melts off the bone into your mouth. Well worth the wait in the end! Got to wrap up the leftovers and take it away too to finish off later. Awesome!
