Key Lime Pie Protein Shake – Protein Treats By Nutracelle

I easily get tired of the same protein shake over and over, so I love to think of new ideas. I work night shift, so I typically do my best recipe brainstorming at 8am on my drive home to keep me awake! I like to think of what ingredients I already have to make a great new shake when I wake up later that day. We always have tons of limes in our house and I wanted to try something different. This key lime pie protein shake turned out even more delicious than I expected! It tastes more like a dessert than a nutritious protein shake. Yum!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp of lime juice
  • 1/2 lime zested
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds

Add all of the ingredients to your blender. I find it easier to add the liquid ingredients before the powder so it doesnt all get stuck at the bottom. Blend it all together and enjoy!

Ingredients For This Key Lime Pie Smoothie

  • Banana: Freeze your banana slices ahead of time to make this lime smoothie cold and frosty.
  • Yogurt: Plain Greek yogurt makes this smoothie rich and creamy. You could also throw in a dollop of cream cheese for a more decadent, cheesecake-y smoothie.
  • Lime: You can use key lime juice or regular lime juice, but aim for fresh juice where possible.
  • Sweetener: I love honey in this smoothie, but you could also use sugar, agave, or maple syrup.
  • Vanilla: Finish it off with a dash of vanilla extract to bring that pie feeling!

Key Lime Pie Healthy Shake:2 SCOOPS French Vanilla Formula 11 SCOOP Vanilla Protein Drink Mix1 teaspoon True Lime powder8 to 10 ounces water2 to 3 teaspoons instant sugar free vanilla instant pudding2 to 3 teaspoons instant sugar free cheesecake instant puddingSwizzle glass with Smuckers sugar free caramel sundae syrupTop with graham cracker crumble1 cup ice cubes

Combine all the dry powder ingredients and the water in the carafe of your blender and blend for 10 to 15 seconds. Add in the desired amount of ice and blend for 30 seconds longer or until thick and creamy.

Key Lime Pie After A Few Weeks

Protein powder usually get boring or disgusting after 3-4 weeks.

However, I got tired of drinking Key Lime Pie after about a week straight.

For two reasons:

  • Its more sour than sweet. Not extremely sour. But not sweet enough for me to drink it all the time
  • Key Lime Pie isnt a versatile flavor. You cant do anything else but make key lime pie shakes. Compare that to vanilla or chocolate which you can make tens of different recipes.

Now does Key Lime Pie itself, taste nasty after a few weeks? No. The flavor stays the same.

So if you love the taste of key lime pie, youre in good luck. If not, it still serves you well by mixing up the flavor a bit.

This is good to have when youre tired of drinking sweet protein shakes.

Should you steam spinach or kale before adding it to smoothies?

My opinion? Yes! Just lightly steam/wilt the spinach before adding it to the smoothie. It doesnt take long to do on the stove top, but if youre in a rush, you can even microwave it.

Steaming or cooking deactivates the oxalic acid content in these types of leafy greens, which makes them more nutritious. WHY? Because Oxalic acid binds with the calcium in our food making it unavailable for digestion.

This being said, adding spinach to your lime smoothie is optional. But I recommend it because it packs a punch of iron into the drink, which many women lack in their diet.

  • VEGAN RECIPE OPTION:

With the ingredients shown below, this is a dairy free smoothie recipe. To be sure that its also vegan, you should double check the ingredients on your protein powder of choice.

  • TO REDUCE THE SUGAR / CARBS

Although there is just one half of a banana in the entire batch , some people on a keto diet prefer not to eat bananas at all.

If this is the case for you, just omit the frozen banana and add a little extra ice instead or 1/4 c chilled canned coconut cream/milk. As a result, it will be creamy and thick without the extra carbs.

Also, as a substitute for the maple syrup, you can use sugar-free syrup or an artificial sweetener of your choice.

    Out of everything I mixed this protein powder with, this was the best.

    The banana is like a key that unlocks the treasure chest of flavor within this protein powder.

    The effects are twofold

    First being the sweetness of the banana balances out the sourness of the lime. This is a well-known tactic chefs use when cooking. If something is too sour or acidic, theyll add sugar to tone it down. And if something is too sweet, theyll add something sour.

    And second being the banana gets rid of the chalky texture and gives it more of a Key Lime Pie effect. Imagine eating a real key lime pie made from scratch. Whisked ingredients, baked in the oven, then cooled in the fridge, ready for you to dive in.
