Extra Dessert Delights Gum: Wrigley Pulls The Old Switcheroo

Thanks to Fork in the Road San Francisco correspondent Tracy Van Dyk for sending this picture of a gum Wrigley started marketing there, but not widely available here perhaps because our stores are so small and cant fit the gazillion lines of gum products currently being trotted out.
The two pictured above are from Wrigleys Extra line of gum, a sugar-free product launched in 1984 said to sustain its flavor after being chewed for a while . The website makes the extravagant claim that the gum offers incredible, long-lasting flavors that can trigger a state of perpetual enjoyment, making it sound like a branch of Buddhism.
Several subsequent iterations of the line were produced, the most recent of which is Extra Dessert Delights, said on the website to be inspired by real desserts. Indeed, the gum might almost be seen as a dessert substitute, because who, after eating a real dessert, wants to pop a piece of gum in her mouth with the scary, sugar-free, hyper-artificial tastes these gums no doubt possess?
If Fork in the Road can find them in town, well conduct a tasting, next to the real dessert.
The entire flavor line includes rainbow sherbet, apple pie, orange creme pop, mint chocolate chip , strawberry shortcake, and key lime pie. Note theyre not attempting any dessert with chocolate, probably because no convincing artificial flavor exists.
Why Were Extra Dessert Delights Discontinued
The reason Extra Dessert Delights were discontinued might be because special gum flavors rarely stick around for long.
Another reason might be that consumers prefer regular flavors of the same brand, or the market has been overtaken by a competitive brand, leading to the discontinuation of a line of products.
What Do The Letters On Extra Packs Mean
If you look at the Extra brands packages, you may see the phrase Find Your Other Half and prominent capital letters.
The phrase is a marketing gimmick that encourages consumers to buy more than one gum pack.

Since Extra dessert delights hit the market in 1984, the product has hit several milestones to become one of the most popular chewing gums in the United States.

Review: Extra Dessert Delights Chewing Gum
One of the pleasures of travelling south of the border is checking out curious chewing gum flavours that have yet to make it to Canada, or that, for some reason, will never put in an appearance in the frozen north. These three Extra gums stood out at the counter of a Seattle gas station, and I knew I needed to try them.
Strawberry Shortcake: A creamy strawberry. Reminds me of the strawberry flavour of Japanese candy Hi-Chew. A little bit of tea, and some slight minty flavour for freshening. Not bad. The least unique of the three flavours.
Key Lime Pie: OK. So, this is crazy. It doesnt just taste like lime it tastes almost exactly like key lime pie. The filling, the crust, everything. Really good, though strange enough that I wouldnt keep it around as an everyday gum. Not meant to fight bad breath, but freakishly life-like in key-lime flavour.
Mint Chocolate Chip: On first contact with the tongue, theres a tiny hint of artificial watermelon. Then it opens up into a full-on mint and chocolate assault. Its like crewing a piece of mint gum after eating a chocolate bar. The chocolate tastes artificial, but it still works fine in the gum.
Cost: $1.59 for each pack of gum at a gas station.
Value for cash money: Par for the course. Not bad at all.

Nutrition?: 5 calories per stick.
