Conagra Foods Acquires Brand Trademarks For Marie Callender’s
OMAHA, Neb., Jun 14, 2011 — ConAgra Foods, Inc., one of North America’s leading food makers, today announced the purchase, effective June 9, 2011, of the Marie Callender’s® brand trademarks from Marie Callender Pie Shops, Inc., for a price of $57.5 million. Marie Callender Pie Shops, Inc. operates the Marie Callender’s® Restaurant & Bakery chain in California and the southwestern U.S.
This transaction fits into ConAgra Foods’ acquisition strategy which seeks to add depth and strength to its existing product lines in key strategic pillars such as convenient meals, snacks and meal enhancers.
“ConAgra Foods has experienced great success as a long-term licensee of the Marie Callender’s trademark more than tripling the brand’s annual retail sales in the past ten years,” said André Hawaux, Consumer Foods president, ConAgra Foods. “Owning the trademark not only allows for greater control of the brand, but gives us the added flexibility to further grow the Marie Callender’s brand.”
The company’s current Marie Callender’s frozen foods business includes pot pies, desserts and a wide array of single and multi-serve frozen dinners and entrees, sales of which have grown to nearly $800 million annually. Marie Callender’s is now ConAgra Foods’ No. 2 retail brand, after Banquet®, selling 284 million frozen meals and desserts each year .

How Long To Cook A Frozen Pot Pie In The Air Fryer
This will depend on the temperature at which you are cooking it and the size of the pot pies. You notice in the section where I talk about brands, they all come in different sizes ranging from 7oz to 16oz.
The Marie Callenders we cook comes in 8oz sizes and takes approximately 25 mins to cook in the air fryer.

Cooking Directions For Baking Marie Callenders Pot Pies
Preheat the oven to 400 F. Remove pot pie from outer carton leave pot pie in paper tray. Wrap crust edge with a strip of aluminum foil.
Cook on baking sheet 60 minutes. Remove carefully its hot! Let stand 5 minutes to complete cooking.
Check that pot pie is cooked thoroughly. Internal temperature needs to reach 165 F as measured by a food thermometer in several spots.
The crust will be golden brown, and steam will rise from the filling. Enjoy!

Cover the top of frozen pot pies with foil, Put them in the air fryer basket and air fry at 400°F / 200°C for 20 mins, then remove foil and cook for another 5 mins to crisp up the crust.

The Best Frozen Chicken Pot Pies
For years I’ve been rejecting the notion of comfort food on the reasonable but insufficient grounds that I fear nostalgia and I think the term’s too cutesy. Plus a restaurant-owning friend once told me he makes a lot of boat payments courtesy of comfort- and “value”-minded patrons who opt for the $14 macaroni and cheese instead of the $21 roast chicken. Therefore, it has always made me queasy for personal, lexicographic, and financial reasons to consider the comforting powers of certain foods.
But I’m tired of talking myself in circles to avoid what is, after all, a perfectly apt label, and admitting as much finally frees me up to discuss my love of meat pies in general and frozen chicken pot pies in particular.
Most of the five minutes a year I allow for reflection on my childhood are spent rhapsodizing about Willow Tree Farm chicken pies. The chicken was whitish and the gravy was greenish and the vegetables were nonexistent and the face-stuffing was rapturous, and when I started planning this story I assumed it would be more of a coronation of Willow Tree than an actual fair fight among leading national brands.
But it turns out that my beloved Willow Tree isn’t a leading national brand: It’s a Massachusetts phenomenon that is unevenly exported to the rest of the country. Sorry about that, guys.
That leaves us to consider chicken pot pies from Boston Market, Stouffer’s, Marie Callender’s, and Swanson.

A Comfort Food Favorite
The Southern California based-chain thrived for more than 40 years, becoming a comfort food favorite with a few unique touches that set it apart from its competition, namely a fully-stocked bar, serve-yourself salad bar, and of course, a menu that heavily featured Callender’s signature sweet and savory pies. At one point the chain had nearly 140 locations . The Orange County Register captured Callender’s cozy, grandma’s house-themed decor complete with dark wood outfitted dining rooms, overflowing bread baskets, and a vintage plaque menu offering slices of pie for 35 cents.
Marie Callender’s dine-in pie appeal was wide, but take-home pies did a booming business as well. The market for bake-at-home versions was so hearty that the company branched out into frozen foods. Reuters reports that ConAgra paid a cool $57.5 million for the brand back in 2011. Unfortunately, the restaurants didn’t fare as well. USA Today notes that the company filed for Chapter 11 in 2019.
