Carrying On A Sweet Tradition

Sabrina Dixon poses with some her favorite creations at Cake & All Things Yummy in Kernersville on Tuesday.

As a child, Sabrina Dixon was intrigued by the wedding cakes her grandmother, Esther Holbrook, decorated in Elkin.

As an adult, Dixon is carrying on the family tradition.

Dixon celebrated her first anniversary as the owner of Cake & All Things Yummy in historic Kernersville last month.

She got her first hands-on experience with cake decorating in 1993, as part of a school assignment.

“I was in a Foods and Nutrition class taught by Helen Prince at East Forsyth High School,” she said. “We had a Mother’s Day cake project with a spring theme. It was my first chance to use tips, bags and icing and I was fascinated.”

After high school, she began frequenting Faye’s Wonderland, a cake decorating supply store, now closed, that once was on Old Winston Road. She enrolled in its beginning cake decorating class, then rose to the advanced level. Finally, she decided that she was spending so much time and money at Faye’s that she applied for a job. She worked there for a year.

When she got a job at the Sears Credit Center in Greensboro, Dixon contributed cakes for office parties and other events. Her co-workers were so impressed that they began placing orders and requests. Dixon baked and decorated her cakes at home, eventually dreaming of opening her own bakery.

In 2008, she and her husband purchased what had been a small diner in downtown Kernersville. Johnathan Dixon, the owner of Dixon Custom Cabinetry two blocks away, had grand plans for transforming the space. With rich, chocolate colored paint, crackled glazed cabinets and ceilings, pink accents and caramel-stained concrete floors, Cake & All Things Yummy now looks as delectable as the baked goods for sale in the glass cases.

Even though Sabrina Dixon chose to open Cake & All Things Yummy during the recession, the business flourished almost immediately. Dixon thinks that it grew rapidly because of the economy, not in spite of it.

“I believe that people do want to indulge in the simple pleasures. This is a treat they can have and not be a strain or break the bank,” said Dixon. “And still they celebrate birthdays and have weddings in a recession so this is a good business.”

“Those are my favorite,” said customer Tracy Adams, who was picking up several to take to her sick cousin. “I’ve come in here once a week since they opened.”
