Comparison To Other Hymnody
Some proponents of “standard” hymns generally dislike gospel music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For example, Patrick and Sydnor complain that commercial success led to a proliferation of such music, and “deterioration, even in a standard which to begin with was not high, resulted.” They went on to say, “there is no doubt that a deterioration in taste follows the use of this type of hymn and tune it fosters an attachment to the trivial and sensational which dulls and often destroys sense of the dignity and beauty which best befit the song that is used in the service of God.”
Gold reviewed the issue in 1958, and collected a number of quotations similar to the complaints of Patrick and Sydnor. However, he also provided this quotation: “Gospel hymnody has the distinction of being America’s most typical contribution to Christian song. As such, it is valid in its inspiration and in its employment.”
Today, with historical distance, there is a greater acceptance of such gospel songs into official denominational hymnals. For example, the made this acceptance explicit in The Faith We Sing, a 2000 supplement to the official denominational hymnal. In the preface, the editors say, “Experience has shown that some older treasures were missed when the current hymnals were compiled.”
State And Federal Representation
Residents of Oceanside may attend schools in the , , , , Fallbrook Union High School District, or Fallbrook Union Elementary School District, depending on their address. The Oceanside Unified School District provides instrumental music programs in grades 4-12.
The Oceanside Unified School District has two comprehensive high schools, off Rancho Del Oro and off Mission Avenue. High school students are also served by and . OUSD has 24 schools plus three charter schools, including the , and two brand new schools, Louise Foussat Elementary School and , that opened in the Fall of 2007. Cesar Chavez Middle School, which is on the corner of Frazee and Oleander, will be built on 14 acres , house 11 buildings totaling 84,000 square feet , and will serve 1,000 6th8th grade students.
The other school, Louise Foussat Elementary School, located on Pala Road, is built on 12.6 acres of land with 35 classrooms totaling 54,490 square feet and can accommodate 800 students.
A free, independent public charter school, Scholarship Prep, is a new TK-8th grade school which was authorized to open in August 2017 and is sited at the historic San Luis Rey Mission. It offers a full educational experience for Oceanside students.
Israel & New Breed Biography
Israel & New Breed is a Christian worship group mostly known for a cross-cultural style of worship music that fuses elements from Gospel music, Jazz and Rock. The album Alive in South Africa, recorded live in Cape Town, received a Grammy Award for “Best Traditional Gospel Album” in 2007 and a song from the album, “Not Forgotten”, received a Dove Award for “Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song” in 2006. Both the album Live from Another Level and rendition of “Again I Say Rejoice” received a Dove in 2005. Israel Houghton formed his global supergroup in 1997, but also performs solo albums and has served as worship leader for the Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. He is currently signed to Integrity Music.

Emergence Of Black Gospel
The Pentecostal movement quickly made inroads with churches not attuned to the Europeanized Black church music that had become popular over the years since Emancipation. These congregations readily adopted and contributed to the gospel music publications of the early 20th century. , pioneer of , soon emerged from this tradition as the first great gospel recording artist. The first person to introduce ragtime to gospel was .
The 1930s saw the rise of Black gospel quartets such as the and the . In addition to these high-profile quartets, there were many Black gospel musicians performing in the 1920s and 30s, usually playing the guitar and singing in the streets of Southern cities.

It has been said that 1930 was the year traditional black gospel music began, as the National Baptist Convention first publicly endorsed the music at its 1930 meeting. Dorsey was responsible for developing the musical careers of many African-American artists, such as Mahalia Jackson .

About Israel & New Breed
Worship leader, recording artist, songwriter, and producer Israel Houghton became involved full-time in worship ministry in 1989. From the start, he looked to overcome cultural and denominational barriers. With this idea as a centerpiece, Israel formed New Breed Ministries in 1995 with his wife, Meleasa, and a group of world-class musicians and singers.
Touring extensively brought the Ministries’ powerful and diverse sound to churches around the U.S., while Israels two 1997 releases Whisper It Loud and Way of the World kicked off his recording career.
New Season from 2001 became the first Israel & New Breed release and their first release on Sony. That label also issued Real in 2002 and Live from Another Level in 2004.
Alive in South Africa from 2005 featured a performance in Cape Town in front of 8,000 attendees. The holiday album Timeless Christmas appeared a year later, followed by Love God. Love People. The London Sessions in 2010.
In 2012 Integrity issued Decade, a two-disc, 26-track career overview, as well as Jesus at the Center: Live. Houghton and his group continued to document their travels with 2015s Covered: Alive in Asia.
Contemporary Black Gospel And Gospel Rap
emerged in the late 1960s and early 70s with Walter Hawkins highly popular “Oh Happy Day” which is still performed worldwide in the 2000. Artists such as James Cleveland, Aretha Franklin, the Clark Sisters, Andrae Crouch and Richard Smallwood followed crossing over musically and gaining notoriety, and this pattern would repeat itself in subsequent decades, with new artists like and making increasingly more bold forays into the secular world with their musical stylings. The current sphere of Black gospel recording artists is almost exclusively of the urban contemporary bent.
Also of note is the rise of , which has gained increasing popularity since the days of the and . Often considered a subgenre of urban contemporary gospel, Christian rap has become dominated in present times by artists from , who have seen perhaps the most commercial success of any artists in the gospel genre has charted in the top 10 of on the three times, with his 2014 album debuting at No. 1.
Developing out of the fusion of traditional Black gospel with the styles of popular in the 70s and 80s, is the most common form of recorded gospel music today. It relies heavily on rhythms and instrumentation common in the secular music of the contemporary era , while still incorporating the themes and heritage of the traditional Black gospel genre. is the foremost individual in this genre, while Andrae Crouch, the , and Yolanda Adams are also very popular and noteworthy.
