Day 1: Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Orisson | Camino Frances 2019 | Camino de Santiago

Café Ttipia | A lovely restaurant and bar along right on the main road but with nice views over the Nivé river. Delicious and cheap!

Hurrup Eta Klik | A local restaurant where you can try a good Axoa and taste delicious cider! They have a pilgrim menu too.

Au coup Faim | snack bar with sandwiches and crepes. Well served and good.

Artizarra | Bakery where you can buy Macaron, chocolate and the traditional Basque Cake made out of almond and fresh cherry or whipped cream.

Getting From Pamplona To St Jean Pied De Port

There are two primary ways to get from Pamplona to St. Jean: the seasonal bus service or a taxi/shared ride.

ALSA runs at least 2 buses a day between Pamplona and St. Jean during the high season. Getting information on scheduling is difficult and the ALSA website isnt helpful. Its probably just easiest to show up at the bus station or message ALSA for timing information.

You can also pre-book a shared taxi or private ride through Camino Facil or Taxi Pamplona. The shared ride costs ~104, but if they can fill the car with other people, you can share the cost with others.

Another alternative is to simply wing it at the airport or bus station. This is exactly what I did on my most recent Camino. I had planned to go downtown and take the bus. There were 4 pilgrims on my plane and one of them had pre-booked a private ride. We got to chatting and learned that but there was extra room in the van, so we all piled in and paid our share, getting to St Jean much earlier than if wed taken the bus.

Your fellow pilgrims will be totally obvious at the airport, so dont be afraid to chat them up.

Stjean Pied De Port The Beginning Of The Camino Frances

Its a very lovely town where everything is about the Camino de Santiago. France is noticeably more expensive than Spain dont worry if everything costs more than you expected once youre out of France prices on the Camino Francés go back to normal.

There are many places to stay in St.Jean including one municipal albergue that gets full quickly in the season if you arrive after lunchtime your chances of getting a bed there are quite small.

Getting to St.Jean Pied de Port

You can get here through France or Spain depending on where your international flight arrives. We have a detailed explanation of how to get to St.Jean from both countries.

Accommodation in St.Jean Pied de Port

Booking accommodation on the Camino. In the beginning, I didnt book anything because I walk fast I always arrived early enough to get a bed but after a couple of weeks, I was pretty tired of this bed chase I started booking places. Remember, municipal albergues cant be booked. Booking over the phone was complicated . You have to phone first to book, then a day before your booking phone again to confirm, they usually hold the booking till 3pm so if youre arriving after 3pm you have to phone again that day to say youre still coming. I ended up booking places through booking.com it was quick and easy. In this post, you can find links to the most accommodations on the Camino Frances that can be booked online.

History Of St Jean Pied De Port

The town itself was founded in the 12th century after the original nearby town of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux was razed to the ground by Richard I of England.

This destruction was part of a campaign ordered by his father King Henry II, to punish Barons who had previously fought on the side of Richard who had since reconciled with Henry. It was during this campaign that he acquired the name Richard the Lionheart.

Situated strategically on a meeting of the River Nive and roads that extend into all parts of the Basque Country, the town has always been an important place for traders and pilgrims alike.

Formerly the capital of the Basque region of Base-Navarre, St Jean Pied de Port might be small in size but has great charm. The medieval cobbled streets are lined with beautiful and unique red and white buildings inside the old town walls.

Saint Jean Pied de Port is the nexus of several routes that spread out across mainland Europe, and it was from here that pilgrims most frequently made the crossing into the Iberian peninsula.

The tradition remains and the small town is often saturated with pilgrims, and pilgrim related tourism, during most of the year. With so many newly minted pilgrims roaming the streets, it has an air of excitement mixed with apprehension and a touch of dread.

You are advised to have a reservation before arriving, and the same holds true for the very few accommodation options that exist between here and Roncesvalles. If reservations are not part of your plans, march on with the philosophy that the camino provides, as it so often does in the most unexpected of ways.

Landmarks to explore include the Citadelle at the top of town, the Porte de San Jacques, and the Notre Dame du Bout du Pont. Look to the cobbled streets for the well-trodden plaques that point the way to Santiago de Compostela.

Market day in Saint Jean Pied de Port is Monday, which is also one of its least busy days for pilgrims.

Saint Jean Pied de Port, or Donibane Garazi as it is known in Basque , was founded in the late 12th century by the Kings of Navarre and served as the capital.

There is no magical best way to get to Saint Jean Pied de Port. The nearest airport to Saint Jean Pied de Port is in Biarritz. But flying into Biarritz isnt necessarily the cheapest or fastest way to get to St Jean.

The closest major transcontinental airports to St Jean are Paris, Barcelona and Madrid. Regardless of which major airport hub you choose, getting to St Jean will require at least three connections, with some combination of air, train and bus.

If you can catch reasonable connections, it takes roughly the same amount of time and transfers getting to St Jean from any of the three airports. The cheapest option is the train from Madrid Atocha station and the most expensive is a plane to Biarritz, France. The options noted below range from 55-245 and require 6-8 hours.

So, pick the airport that offers you the cheapest or most convenient routing from home.

You may also want to think about where youd like to spend a night burning off the jet lag on the front end OR resting up and sightseeing on the back end.

You can also look into whats called an open jaw return fare. This means that you go into one airport and out of another such as into Paris and out of Madrid. These routes are worth checking out because they are sometimes no more expensive than going out and back from the same airport.
