Most Dog DNA tests consist of taking a cheek swab from your pooch and sending it for analysis. Tests generally cost around $60 dollars or more and can be done in the comfort of your own home.
There are a range of companies who offer Dog DNA testing, generally the more expensive the test, the more dog breeds the company have in their database. As with all database systems, accuracy will improve as companies collect more data. They will have more DNA strands to compare samples to.
Once you have ordered your DNA sample kit, you will take a swab from the inside of the cheek of your pooch. You will return the sample, as per the instructions in the kit and within 2-4 weeks you will have your results. The test will identify, where possible how much of a particular pure-breed exists in your dog.
Despite there not being any solid numbers stating how accurate dog DNA testing is, there are concerns that if a dataset just doesnt exist in the database where the sample is being tested, then the information just wont show up. In short, if your dog has a rare breed in them rare enough to not be in the database, youll never know.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
Embark has the largest collection wand of any DNA test we reviewed, and that can likely feel uncomfortable inside a small dogs mouth. The swab itself looks like a Q-tip and is approximately four times larger than other swabs we used in this guide. Our testers with dogs under 20 pounds said it was difficult to fit the swab between their dogs cheeks and gums.
The collection instructions were also confusing. Embark has the pet owner swab the inside of the dogs cheek and under the tongue for 30 to 60 seconds, then enclose the swab in a stabilizing solution tube and mail back the kit using a prepaid box. But Embark offers three versions of printed instructions , and each was slightly different. I think having a single set of instructions printed on the box would be much clearer and leave less room for confusion, said Wirecutter’s Aviva Johnson and Swansons owner.
Embark was also the second-slowest service we tested. The process took two to six weeks, more than any other kit we reviewed. On average, it took Embark 21 days to deliver the results, compared with 18 days for both Find My Pet DNA and Wisdom Panel.
Dont be surprised if youre drowning in emails after registering the kit online. Embark sent 19 promotional and update emails over three months, more than any service we reviewed. By comparison, Wisdom Panel sent five, DNA My Dog sent four, and Find My Pet DNA sent one email.

Physical Traits Aid In Identification
Purebred dogs can often be identified by their physical traits. Height, body conformation, coat length, color, markings, head shape, ears, and tail carriage can all be helpful in determining the breed of a purebred dog.
For example, a large breed dog with a sloped back, black and tan coat of medium length, erect ears, hanging tail, and a longer snout is likely to be a German Shepherd.
In contrast, a small, round dog with a short, tan coat, a corkscrew tail, and a smooshed face is likely to be a Pug.
Unfortunately, physical traits are not always reliable when identifying mixed breed dogs. You might expect mixed breed dogs to have a combination of their parents traits. In reality, though, mixed breed dogs may look like both of their parents, one of their parents, or neither of their parents. In fact, all of these tendencies can sometimes be observed in the same litter!
