She says: It’s a rice cake. Really, how good can it be? Sometimes I forget what they taste like. I DO, however, appreciate the chocolate coating and the slim profile of the rice cake. Both the thickness and the chocolate made the rice cake much more palatable.

Trader Joe’s Tteok Bok Ki
So, Trader Joe’s Tteok Bok Ki…can’t say I’ve ever even heard of them before they plopped into my grocery cart. Thank goodness for the ‘murican-‘splained “Korean spicy stir-fried rice cakes” in the banner, because that, I can hold a concept of.
These are, at first bite, interesting. There’s a few ways to make them, I opted for what purported to be the crispiest option by inserting these oversized frozen rice poogs into the airfryer, while seperately simmering the almost glowing red sauce. I’m not sure if crispy is the right word, because there’s still plenty of soft mochi-like chewiness to each bite, but the outside layer did have a faint crispness, so there you go I guess. It’s an unusual to my palate yet pretty fun bite.
Here’s one of the times that TJ’s really succeeds if looked at from a certain vantage point. Sure, I’m far from a tteok bok ki expert, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and wager that the TJ’s version isn’t the best in the world. Heck, how authentic it really is is above my pay grade here. But…now I know I’d stand a pretty excellent chance at enjoying the real deal, so if ever granted the opportunity, I’m gonna go for it without hesitation. That somewhat harkens back to the OG TJ’s business plan of introducing new tastes and experiences to their customers. For me, it succeeds here.

Trader Joe’s Just Gave Vegan Korean Food Fans A Reason To Get Excited
If you’re unfamiliar with tteokbokki, the dish is a popular street food in Korea, likened by The Squishy Monster to an afterschool snack of mac and cheese. The comfort food can be prepared with any number of additional ingredients to suit your taste , but at its core, tteokbokki is centered around stir-fried rice cakes in a spicy-sweet gochujang-based sauce.
Depending on where in the U.S. you live, you may have trouble finding tteokbokki or all the ingredients needed to make it yourself at a local store. But now, Korean food fans will be able to buy the snack at their closest Trader Joe’s but that’s not all. While many tteokbokki recipes often contain fish sauce or anchovies in the sauce mix, the U.S. grocery chain’s interpretation of the popular dish is vegan.

Sweet On Trader Joe’s: Dark Chocolate Half
Tell me if this sounds familiar. Every year or two, you think…”You know, I haven’t had a rice cake in ages. I’ve probably forgotten how much I like them.”
This is me. And normally, it doesn’t end well. But, BUT…Trader Joe’s started carrying these Organic Chocolate Half-Coated Rice Cake Thins, and I had to give them a try. And, as anti-rice cake as Mr. E is, he was forced to try them as well.

A package of 8 rice cake thins costs $1.99. These contain two organic ingredients: dark chocolate and puffed brown rice.
We Tried Trader Joes Tteokbokki
When I grabbed a bag of Trader Joes Tteokbokki, I should have also made a trip to H-Mart and gotten the Tteokbokki from the deli. But I didnt. So no taste-off this time.
Its simple enough to make. I ended up doing a hybrid method because there was no way I was going to dirty two pans or the air fryer and a pan for such a small amount of rice cakes. So I soaked the rice cakes in water for 15 minutes and separately mixed the sauce packet with a cup of water for the sauce.
You can see the whole process in my TikTok below. But its pretty straight forward, you crisp the rice cakes in a little bit of oil. And then I opted to simmer them in the sauce until it was thickened. Sprinkle on a little extra sesame seeds and voila.

Ive seen other people saying that they didnt like these and would prefer something fully covered in chocolate. I wasnt expecting to like them that much, but I was curious. I actually think theyre pretty good! Not that they have salt in them, but they seem to have a sort of sweet and salty combination between the rice cake and the chocolate. I like how thin and crunchy the rice cake is, too.
I just wish they didnt have milk powder in the chocolate.

These have a satisfying & crisp bite to them. The chocolate coating is actually substantial. Probably could use some salt or a topping, but as is pretty good.

My daughter offered one of these to me. Im not really a dark chocolate person so I was skeptical. Now Im hooked almost to the point of being addicted . Delicious coating of Belgian chocolate. YUM!!
