This tasty main dish is also called Navajo Tacos. It originates from southwestern Native Americans as a result of being relocated from Arizona to New Mexico, and using cooking staples given to them from the government.

Over the years, Fry Bread has become a unique cultural symbol. They are also commonly referred to as Indian Fry Bread or Pop Overs. Lots of names for lots of goodness!

With its unique history, they are especially popular here in Arizona and in New Mexico.

The Fry Bread Im sharing today is one weve used since I was little, passed on from my Grandma Luna and her mother, my Great Grandma Medina.

While you are the making the bread brown some ground beef. Add the taco seasoning and water. Simmer for five to ten minutes. Spoon the taco meat on to the warm bread. Top with shredded cheese, tomatoes, green onions, black olives and sour cream. Serve as soon as possible while everything is tasty and warm.

How Do You Make Fry Bread

In medium bowl whisk flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly stir in warm water with a fork and mix until dough comes together. Cover with wrap and let rest at least 1 2 hours. This is a sticky dough so you will need to flour your hands and the working surface. Pull off a piece a little smaller than a golf ball. Roll into a ball as best you can, then pat it out like a mini pizza. You can also roll them out. They should be a little more than 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Dont worry if they are not all round or the exact same size.

In a heavy pan heat 1-2 inches of oil to 375 degrees. Fry until the bread is golden brown and puffs up. Then turn and fry the other side until golden brown. Roll and fry as you go that way if you want them thinner or thicker you can adjust accordingly. Remove to paper towels to drain and cool enough to handle.

    Simple Dough Recipe For Indian Fry Bread

    Easy Navajo Fry Bread is made from a very simple dough. Ill bet you already have everything you need to make it.

    No need to worry about the frying either. No deep fryer or gallons of oil is necessary for this recipe. You can make Easy Indian Fry Bread in a skillet with only an inch of oil, or less.

  • Mix together the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Heat the milk and water together. Then slowly add the hot liquid mixture to the dry ingredients a little at a time while mixing with your fingers until it forms a ball that pulls away from the side of the bowl. If needed, add more flour to the dough if it is still too sticky.
  • Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  • Then heat your oil to 375 degrees F.
  • Meanwhile, cut the dough into 10 equal balls. Then flatten them and slowly pull the edges until it becomes a 6 to 7 inch disk . Make sure to make all 10 disks so they can rest before frying.
  • Make a tiny hole in the middle of each disk, so the dough doesnt balloon up as it fries. Lay them out in a single layer so they dont stick together.
  • Gently lay one dough disk in the hot oil pressing down with tongs so the oil goes over the top of the dough. Fry until golden brown around edges, then turn over and cook until the color matches, usually 20-30 seconds per side. Drain on paper towels.
  • How To Make Fried Bread:

    • First, you need a medium size mixing bowl. Add the flour baking powder and salt to the bowl and combine together.
    • Then slowly stir in the warm water until the dough starts to form. Make sure to gradually add in the water because you may not need all of it. You dont want to use hot water but warm water instead.
    • Next, let the dough sit for 5 minutes.
    • Then roll the dough and cut it into 6 pieces.
    • Next, roll out each piece into circles that are ½ inches in diameter. Make sure they are each about ½ inch thick so it cooks evenly.
    • Get out a large pot or cast iron skillet and add 3 inches of oil to it. Start to fry the pieces of dough in the oil until the dough is golden brown and starts to poofs up slightly. Then flip the dough to fry the other side.
    • Line a plate with a paper towel and put the fried dough on it. This will help to drain any excess grease.
    • Enjoy plain or add your favorite toppings. It is delicious either way.

    Indian Tacos and I go way back. I probably first tried one as soon as my mom was able to feed it to me. The only drawback was that I never had it more than once a year at the State Fair!     The Fry Bread is what really sets this hearty meal apart. Indian Fry bread is just a simple bread mixture with leavening and milk that is flattened out and fried. It puffs up and makes a delicious bed for all the yummy toppings.

    This recipe makes around 4-5 fry breads depending on the size of the Indian Taco you are making. State fair sized Indian Tacos would be more like 1-2 of these, but I am assuming you want a smaller sized portion. When we have one at the State Fair we often split it between 4-5 people because it is so HUGE!

    Indian Fry Bread Tacos are one of those simple food that are best enjoyed when fresh off the pan. So I highly discouraged you from making it ahead of time, however, you can mix up the dough in advance and store in the fridge or freezer until ready to use.

    To store in the fridge. Cover the dough ball in a plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for 1-2 days.

    To freeze the dough. This dough freezes well, too. In step #6, after tearing about 2-inch sized of dough balls, flash freeze the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the balls 1/2 inch apart and freeze for 3-5 hours or until hard enough to touch. Then once frozen, transfer them into an airtight container, label, and freeze for up to 1 month. When ready to use, thaw the dough balls overnight in the fridge. Let it come to room temperature before rolling them out. Fry according to the directions in the recipe box below.

    This Indian fry bread recipe is quite simple and delicious. Some people just eat because it is so tasty.

    It starts with 4 cups of all-purpose flour. To that, well add 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking powder, then well give this a quick stir to evenly disperse those ingredients.

    Once thats mixed together were going to slowly add in about 1 1/2 cups of hot water. Well slowly work this together into a dough.

    Now as you work it you may need to add in a little bit more water as you go in order to form a soft, sticky dough ball, and at some point, youll probably need to switch to your hands to knead the dough altogether.

    Now you should end up with a dough thats super soft and stretchy and it will be a little bit sticky.

    pour a little bit of vegetable oil into a clean bowl, and then coat the dough ball with that oil and pour a little more on top if you need it.

    The oil will prevent the dough from sticking to the bowl and keep it from drying out.

    Can I Freeze This Recipe

    You can freeze the dough for this recipe, but it takes a little extra work to do so. Lay the separated dough balls on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or wax paper, about 2 inches apart. Place the sheet pan in the freezer for as long as it takes for the exterior of the dough to freeze solid. Then take them out and wrap them separately with plastic wrap and store them in a heavy-duty freezer bag.

    When you are ready to use the dough, switch the dough balls to the fridge the night before and unwrap them while they are still cold. Before frying, allow them to become room temperature then roll them out or pull them into the disk shape. Then continue with the recipe as written.

    Frybread can be called so many things. I grew up calling them Scones but had roommates who called them Navajo Taco Bread or Indian Frybread. Fry Bread is a Native American Bread that has been carried down from generation to generation and made with simple ingredients of flour, water, salt, and a little hot water.

    Growing up I was served scones as a treat with powdered sugar and honey and oh how I loved them. Never knowing how amazing this delicious Fry Bread could be with savory toppings, I only knew the sweet taste of these scones.

    Of course, as I got older and being offered a Navajo Taco my eyes were opened to the possibilities!

    Form The Dough Then Wait

    In a medium bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Use a whisk to ensure the ingredients are all evenly mixed and that there are no clumps as you combine these dry ingredients.

    Next, heat the water in the microwave for 1 minute, then slowly pour the hot water into the blended dry ingredients while mixing steadily with a wooden spoon. If the dough gets too difficult to mix with a spoon, you can use your fingers. Either way, once all the water has been added, bring the dough together into a loose ball and place it in a bowl.

    Now, drizzle 1 tablespoon vegetable oil over the top of the dough so that it doesn’t dry out, then cover the bowl with plastic wrap and rest the dough for an hour. It won’t rise, but the water needs time to fully absorb into the flour.

    This recipe for Indian Fry Bread only requires FOUR ingredients! Chances are you probably already have them on hand, they are:

    DOUGH. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder together in a medium bowl. Add hot water.

    Mix with your hands until dough forms . Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.

    PREP. While dough is resting, add oil to a large sauce pan that is about 1-2 inches deep and heat on MED-HIGH heat .

    DOUGH BALLS. Break off the pieces of dough into golf-ball sized balls . Using a pastry roller or rolling pin, roll the dough onto a lightly floured surface to about 6-7 inches in diameter .

    FRY + ENJOY. Fry each piece in hot oil until dough is golden brown and poofs up . Continue to fry on the other side, keeping it in the oil. Set on a paper towel lined plate to drain oil.

    NOTE: As always, anything fried is best served fresh, so keep than in mind.
