Nothing Bundt Cakes is opening a Springfield location on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 2476 Wabash Ave. in the Sherwood Plaza shopping center. The husband and wife team of Theo and Kristen Spilman are new franchisees for the bakery chain based in Las Vegas. Nothing Bundt Cakes started in 1997 and currently has more than 300 franchises nationwide, including a location in Bloomington and a store preparing to open in Champaign.
The Spilmans, who are originally from Springfield, most recently lived in Austria and managed a cafeteria at a seminary there. Both have worked in the food service industry since they were teenagers.
Last August, we started considering moving back to Springfield, said Kristen Spilman. We were really impressed with the business model and the values aligning with ours, she said of the couples decision to become franchisees for the Springfield area.
The Spilmans took part in support team training in a functional bakery at the companys Dallas headquarters, learning all aspects of the business, according to Theo. They are now in the process of training the 19 employees theyve hired for the Springfield store.
Theo described it as a strangely good time to open, noting that locations are set up for takeout, not dine-in. People need some joy. Cake is about togetherness and family and friends. Were excited to be a piece of that and give people a chance to celebrate again.
A La Carte: Couple To Open Nothing Bundt Cakes Store
Family gatherings are where husband-and-wife team Theo and Kristen Spilman first encountered NOTHING BUNDT CAKES.
Those bundt cakes just kept appearing, Theo said.
Wed been looking for an opportunity to return with our family, Kristen chimed in. Trying to find a way to bring some joy and good employment opportunities. And this company really fits our core values positive work environment, emphasis on community and employees . . . .
And cake, Theo finished.
Springfield shoppers should get a taste of the Las Vegas-based bakery chain this summer with the Spilmans poised to open their first location at 2476 Wabash Ave. in the former 5Star Nutrition spot in Sherwood Plaza. A mid-July opening is planned.
Already, Illinois touts just shy of two dozen of the chain bakeries. But the Springfield location will mark only the third store in central Illinois. Nothing Bundt Cakes already is serving up its desserts in Bloomington and a Champaign location is in the works.
The name Nothing Bundt Cakes sums up the menu. But that doesnt mean the offerings are limited.
The decorative ring-shaped cakes come in nine standard flavors ranging from the classic marble and lemon bundt cakes to white chocolate raspberry and pecan praline. Seasonal featured flavors make appearances throughout the year.
And then there are the sizes 8- or 10-inch, two-tiered, mini bundtlet, bundtlet towers or the bite-sized bundtinis.
