The Fathers Seal On Jesus

I am the Bread of Life – Jesus Christ

First, the last clause of verse 27: On him God the Father has set his seal. I think that means ultimately that Jesus bears the mark of God because he is God. But more directly, its probably saying that God has authorized his Son, as the Son of Man, to be the Mediator of eternal life. He sent him Jesus would give his flesh for the life of the world he would rise from the dead and he would give life to others. God gave this authority to his Son as the Son of Man. He put his divine seal, or mark of authority, on him. Its the same thing we read in John 5:1927:

For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. . . . For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. The Father . . . has given all judgment to the Son. . . . As the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

So the seal of God is Gods authorizing his Son, as the Son of Man, to give eternal life to whom he will.

A Passage Of Promises

Jesus said: I am the bread of life whoever come to me will never ...

Now we enter a section of the Bread of Life discourse where Jesus speaks in terms that clearly suggest both predestination and the perseverance of the saints, two very controversial doctrines argued over by Calvinists and Arminians. First, let’s look at Jesus’ assertion that he won’t lose any whom the Father sends him. After that, we’ll consider the matter of predestination.

How does this idea fit here? Jesus has just offered tremendous promises to a spiritually dull, unbelieving crowd. But Jesus assures them — and the readers — that not all will disbelieve. There will be people the Father sends who will believe and will continue or abide in that faith in spite of the unbelief of this crowd. This isn’t about the workers in the harvest! It is the Father’s harvest and he will not fail to bring it in.

“37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

First, those whom the Father gives to Jesus will come to him , a verse that strongly suggests predestination at work. We’ll consider that when we look at 6:44 in a few moments.

Jesus: Blunt And Critical

In the morning, the crowd cant find Jesus and so, according to verse 24, they cross the sea to Capernaum looking for him. And they find him in the synagogue. We know that because verse 59 says, Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

Verse 25: When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here? They were perplexed at how he had been left behind by his disciples, and yet managed to get across the sea. But Jesus does not see their question as a hopeful sign. He is very blunt and critical. Verse 26: Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

Why Does I Am The Bread Of Life Matter

Jesus identified Himself as the bread of life, the living water, and the way. He did not present Himself a source of salvation but as the only way to salvation. Without Him, without the bread of life, there is no hope for salvation. By identifying Himself as the source of forgiveness, Jesus makes the path to repentance and a relationship with God, plain, simple, and available for everyone.

There are no additional sacrifices or works, because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved . The bread of life will sustain the believer.

The Bread Of Life Discourse And The Lord’s Supper

The Sermon | Jesus Is the Bread of Life | Sermon on John 6:22â59

Each of the Synoptic Gospels includes the Lord’s Supper, and what theologians call “the Words of Institution,” in some form or another. Here’s Matthew’s account:

“26 While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat this is my body.’ 27 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'”

The Apostle Paul states the Words of Institution in a similar way:

“23b The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.'”

John, however, is unique in that he does not include a description of the Lord’s Supper. He records an extended Farewell Discourse given the night Jesus was betrayed , but there is no mention of the Lord’s Supper there. Why? We’re not sure.

Jesus Will Be There For You

Later that evening, the disciples get in a boat and head for Capernaum on the west side of the sea, leaving Jesus behind. The people see them go, but dont know where Jesus is. When a great wind threatens the disciples on the sea about three miles out in the lake, Jesus comes to them walking on the water. They are frightened, but he identifies himself, and they joyfully take him in the boat.

Jesus will be there for you. Nothing can stop him. And what he gives is above all is himself.

And I argued that having Jesus in the boat with them was the end of that story within the story, because John was really making the same point as with the twelve leftover baskets. Jesus will do whatever it takes to be there for us in our troubles. He may seem as distant and as inaccessible as a well-meaning, helpless friend on shore while you are about to drown three miles out to sea. But there is a difference. He makes bread out of nothing, and Jesus walks on water. He will be there for you. Nothing can stop him. And what he gives is above all is himself.

Looking For Jesus For The Wrong Reasons

“22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?'”

The Feeding of the Five Thousand appears to have occurred on a mountainside above the city of Bethsaida in the area known today as the Golan Heights. They find Jesus across the top of the lake in Capernaum and ask how he got there. Jesus doesn’t answer their question, but goes immediately to the real reason for their quest.

“Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.'” 6)

There is a difference between faith in Jesus because his miracles point you to him and a desire to have someone meet your physical needs.

This lesson contains Jesus’ lengthy Bread of Life discourse, which can be divided into four general sections:

  • Jesus, the True Manna
  • Jesus, the Bread of Life
  • Partaking of the Son of Man
  • Reactions to Jesus’ Teaching
  • Food that spoils

    Jesus has said:

God is our Provider, and Jesus is the Bread of Life. John recorded Jesus promise that all who freely accept this bread will no longer hunger. The first of the I am statements of Jesus, which solidify His nature as fully God and fully man is I am the bread of life, which describes the way we find full satisfaction in and through Christ alone.

God is the supplier of divine bread, explains the NIV Commentary, and whoever eats of it will live forever. Every word Jesus spoke on earth carried precise weight and meaning. This important note of Scripture defines our need to trust the Living Word to satisfy our physical bodies, heart and soul.

    Will You Also Go Away

“67 So Jesus asked the twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ 68 Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.'”

There are some “hard sayings” in life that cause the faint of heart to let go. There are those who assent to Jesus’ words, but when there is a crisis of faith, those who continue to feed on Jesus, who continue to believe, who abide in him, they are his true disciples the others walk away. This entire passage is about Jesus having “the words of eternal life,” that is, the words, which, when believed, result in eternal life.

Q6. What was the difference between the Twelve and the crowd of “disciples” that turned away from Jesus? What is the mark of true disciples according to John 8:31-32?

As indicated earlier, while I don’t believe Jesus deliberately gave this teaching with reference to the Sacrament of the Eucharist, I do believe that John, as he composed the Fourth Gospel, included this discourse knowing that his readers would read it with the Lord’s Supper in mind. The Bread of Life passage and the Lord’s Supper have parallel teachings.

    • To feed on the Bread of Life is to believe Jesus’ words and trust in him as the source of our life.
    • To eat Jesus’ flesh and blood means to utterly depend upon him and the truths he teaches for sustenance and life itself.

Breaking Down The Key Parts Of John : 35

#1 Then Jesus declared, Upon hearing the request, Siralways give us this bread, Jesus made his statement. It seems as though the point of feeding the masses the day before was to lead up to this powerful, and life-giving statement.

#2 I am the bread of life. Jesus is the life-giving sustenance that we need if we are to live and not die. There may be intentionality in his beginning the declaration with, I am. Jesus is God the Son, one and equal with the I Am, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. Like bread, he is a fundamentally important means of life, and he is the energy for existence. All things exist in him, and for him, and through him .

#3 Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, Jesus told the disciples in John 4:34, My foodis to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. To obey God, seeking first his kingdom, his righteousness, and carrying out his will for us, trusting him to provide for our daily needs will fill us in a way that is more satisfying than physical food, as we cultivate a deep and loving relationship with the one who created us for himself and for his glory.

#4 and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Streams of living water were what Jesus promised to those who follow him. The Holy Spirit would be poured out as a river of life that can empower the believer for ministry and life, and even more so can raise the dead to live forever on the banks of the heavenly river of life that heals the nations .

    The True Bread From Heaven

I Am the Bread of Life (Instrumental Version)

First, Jesus corrects them. The verse they quoted doesn’t say that Moses fed them, but that God fed them.

“32 Jesus said to them, ‘I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’34 ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘from now on give us this bread.'”

Jesus identifies himself as the “true bread” — another use of John’s style of using “true” to differentiate from the inferior. The true bread comes down from heaven , but it doesn’t spoil quickly like manna did if it wasn’t consumed immediately . The true bread doesn’t just give physical life, but eternal life.

The crowd responds, “Sir, give us this bread always” , but as the dialogue continues, we see that they are too spiritually dull to understand what Jesus is talking about. The woman at the well had responded in similar fashion, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water” . At that point she was as clueless as the crowd is here.
