Become A Foster Parent

Ask our foster parents how it feels to save a life. Ask what it’s like to take in a scared, confused, unwanted dog, and teach him or her about love, trust, and treats.

Fostering is an incredibly vital part of our rescue process. Foster parents provide each furbaby with a loving, safe, supportive environment, which for some, is the first they have ever experienced. For many furbabies, fostering is essential for helping them ‘prepare’ for adoption it gives them the opportunity to work on socialization, leash walking, and learn what it’s like to be part of a family. For the foster parent, we know that each furbaby is another life saved and another pup to spoil and snuggle and teach about love, stuffies, and soft beds.

Small Breed Rescue Of East Tn Celebrated Life Of Pets Who Crossed The Rainbow Bridge

More Videos

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The Small Breed Rescue of East Tennessee knows how hard it can be to lose a beloved pet. Sunday, they hosted an event to celebrate the time they spent with their families before they passed away and crossed The Rainbow Bridge.

It was at Crafty Bastard Brewery off Emory Place from 2 p.m. through 5 p.m. They hosted a dedication event to remember all the pets that families may have lost.

So this is a very kind of bittersweet, sentimental sort of day. Its a celebration but theres also a few tears that have been shed, Small Breed Rescue of East Tennessee event coordinator Missy Martin said.

I actually adopted her from small breed and that got me involved becoming a foster and to where I am today with Small Breed Rescue, Martin said.

Pet owner Mary Nelle Osborne came out to remember her lost, loved fur baby.

My dog is up there, Osborne said. Her name was Paz which means peace.

She said when her husband passed away, her dog was her most loyal companion through the difficult time.

She was a companion to me and saved my soul after he died, Osborne said.

Anna Lawrence, co-founder of the Big Camera, said she wanted to be a part of the effort to make this memorial special and unique.

These are members of their family that they lost and that they are honoring by having them on this wall, Lawrence said.

Why Should You Adopt

East Tennessee Bloodhound Rescue needs donations

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Dogs Available For Adoption In Knoxville

When looking at the makeup of American families today, its rare to see a home where a pet isnt part of the family. According to the most recent data from the APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 67% of households, or around 85 million homes, own a pet. Of these households, dogs and cats top the list of most popular pets, with 63.4 million and 42.7 million households owning dogs and cats, respectively.

In exploring the history of animal shelters and rescue organizations in the country, nothing proves as problematic as the lack of a centralized reporting system to collect data on these organizations. Most of the shelter statistics that are available and accepted today are estimates based on several period surveys, including the aforementioned APPA National Pet Owners Survey along with the AVMA U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook. Without a nationally codified and streamlined process for collecting, organizing, and reporting on shelter data, there has been a grave lack of transparency around the countrys shelters. That makes it difficult not only to pinpoint accurate statistics regarding sheltered animals in America but also to understand the true state of animal welfare in the country, which is the first step to improving that welfare.

Without further ado, here are adoptable dogs in your home city.

    Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary

Senior dogs need love, too. While the thrill of a new puppy is unmistakable, the reward of bringing an older dog into your home to live out its final years can be just as exciting. Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary specializes in unadoptable dogs due to age or health.

You can become a Geezer Guardian and provide a dog with a forever home. The Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary will do the rest, providing everything you need to keep your dog as healthy and happy as possible.

Note that a dog placement is not an adoption but a forever foster arrangement. Speak with the volunteers for more information. You must meet certain requirements before youre approved for this opportunity.

First, you must live within 100 miles of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. You must agree to keep your senior dog indoors. Your existing pets must be spayed or neutered, and you must provide veterinary references.

Consider supporting the Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary license plate program. The non-profit is getting its specialized plates in conjunction with the state of Tennessee, requiring a few more sign-ups. The plates cost $35, and the proceeds benefit the charity.
