The Methods Used In This Study Can Lead To Better Prevention

Over 300 people hospitalised with dog bites in 2020

The trend in prevention of dog bites continues to shift in favor improved ownership and husbandry practices, better understanding of dog behavior, education of parents and children regarding safety around dogs, and consistent enforcement of dangerous dog/reckless owner ordinances in communities. Having reliably identified the potentially preventable factors that co-occurred in their case file, the authors recommend their coding method as a way of enhancing the quantity and quality of information compiled in investigation of any serious dog bite-related injuries.

This study and follow-up report, and their comprehensive methodology offer an excellent opportunity for policy makers, physicians, journalists, indeed, anyone concerned with the prevention of dog bite-related injuries, to develop an understanding of the multifactorial nature of serious and fatal incidents.

How To Prevent Bite Accidents

You may have noticed that many of the breeds listed above are capable of being well-behaved dogs under the right ownership and with proper training. There are many individual dogs of each of these breeds that are well-trained and gentle.

While some dogs may be prone to aggressive behaviors due to their breeds history, dogs are also very much a product of their environment. Most often, regardless of breed, dogs are aggressive as a reflection of the way theyve been treated, a lack of training or fear.

Whether you already have one or are considering getting a dog from the breeds listed or any breed knowing how to prevent a dog bite accident is essential. The key to doing this lies in being a responsible pet owner, training, socialization and understanding your dogs behavior.

Dog Attacks And Breed Specific Legislation

The issue of Breed Specific Legislation has again come under the spotlight in Victoria after a young child was sadly mauled to death by a neighbours dog. A few days later another attack on an elderly lady by two dogs was also widely publicised.

BSL started in Australia more than 70 years ago with a ban on German Shepherd dogs after fear broke out that these dogs would mate with Dingos and threaten livestock. This ban has since been overturned. However, BSL was again introduced in 1991 and still largely remains the same. BSL stands to restrict certain dogs based on breed. The rational being to protect people and animals from harm from dogs considered to be a risk to the community.

The topic of BSL is hotly contested. People who are in favour of it believe that some dogs are more dangerous than others and that such dogs have no place in our community. On the other side are people who argue that all dogs have the potential to do harm and that legislation should be based on a case-by-case scenario.

My initial stance on this issue was in favour of BSL, although after much research and thought, I believe it is not the magic bullet our Government wants us to believe it is. There are a few inherent flaws in BSL

Owners and breeders of restricted breeds are unlikely to register their dogs.

BSL increases the likelihood of underground breeders with no accountability.

People who purchase these dogs may not be aware of the kind of dog they are adopting.

The CDCs Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report collected rabies reportsfrom an 81 year period: 1938-2018.

Their work uncovered that while rabies posed a great risk for the US population for many years, after 1960, this risk dramatically decreased.

Thanks to rabies vaccinations, the threat of rabies infections in humans from dogs has all but vanished.

At present, the threat of rabies as a cause of death, particularly human death, is primarily from rabid bats or dogs imported from countries with a high risk for rabies.

There are several solutions to this problem, and they include training and socializing, i.e., letting the dog interact with people, children, and other dogs. Taking care of the dogs health and regularly vaccinating it may also help.

Organizations that have rejected BSL as an effective approach for public safety include:
National Animal Control Association “Dangerous or vicious dogs should be labeled as such as a result of their actions or behavior and not because of their breed. Dont Touch Dogs Without Permission

    Quick Statistics

Before you or anyone else touches someone elses dog, it is advised that you ask the owners permission verse, and vice versa. This should be done because some owners understand that their pet isnt friendly to other people and other dogs.

If you notice that an owner has posted warning signs around their homes, it may allude to the fact that the animal could attack people that it is not used to interacting with. Asking permission is the same when you see someone with a service dog.

Typically, service dogs will have signs on them that make it clear not to pet them while they are working because you may distract them from alerting their owner of a possible health issue. But, if you ask the owner, there are times when they will allow you to pet the animal.

What To Do When Dogs Attack

Although your first instinct might be to run or pedal as fast as possible, this only worsens the situation. Instead, stay calm, avoid direct eye contact, and stand slightly sideways. If you have anything in your hands like a stick or water bottle, put it between you and the dog to increase your space and make yourself appear larger. Some dogs will sniff the air and walk away.

If an aggressive dog knocks you down, roll into a ball, cover your head, ears, and neck with your arms and hands in a fist to protect your fingers. If the dog is tugging at your shirt or shoes, remove the item. Sometimes dogs stop attacking if they successfully capture something with your scent.

Psychosocial Burdens Related To Dog Bite Injury

When considering the psychosocial burden placed on children following a dog bite, only eight studies within our review included a behavioral health component either in the study design or discussion. With minimal research related to this topic, we must first question whether a childs psychosocial well-being is affected and then identify how and to what degree. With 89.7million dogs owned as pets in the USA, the chances of a child encountering a dog after their injury are extremely high, if not inevitable. By putting our efforts toward identifying how to alleviate psychosocial disturbances caused by a dog bite injury, we would hope to return these children to some sense of normalcy in their daily lives.

    Assessment Of Risk Of Bias

Guidelines provided by the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions were used in the assessment of bias. The reviewers considered bias at both the systematic review level and at the individual study level. By design, our study introduces bias at the systematic review level by incorporating only US-based studies. This is done to bolster our ability to answer the main study questions of how children in the USA are impacted by dog bites and what gaps can be identified in US population-based research studies. Individual study level bias was assessed qualitatively by looking at each included articles study design and how the data were gathered. Studies using retrospective chart reviews or epidemiological databases were prioritized over studies using self-reported data such as parent surveys. Individual-level bias was also considered with respect to selection bias, blinding of outcome assessments, and selective reporting.

    Family Dogs Were Rarely Involved

70.4% of the DBRFs from 2000-2015 involved dogs that were not kept as family pets rather they were only resident on the property. The distinction between a resident dog and a family dog was first proposed years ago by National Canine Research Councils Karen Delise. Dogs are predisposed to form attachments with people, to become dependent on people, and to rely upon their guidance in unfamiliar situations. While it is extremely rare that dogs living as either resident dogs or as family pets ever inflict serious injuries on humans, dogs not afforded the opportunity for regular, positive interaction with people may be more likely, in situations they perceive as stressful or threatening, to behave in ways primarily to protect themselves.

How To Protect Yourself From Dog Bites

Dog behavior is often predicted by the dog owner or the experiences that the dog has lived through. Many dogs have been abused or neglected in some way. These are the types of dogs that bite or attack.

We cant stop stressing the importance of always exercising caution around dogs you dont know.

If a dog seems threatening, avoid eye contact, and remain calm. Dont encourage dogs to attack. Dogs that are startled, sick, or injured are more likely to attack. Instead of approaching them or moving them, its better to contact someone who can provide the proper care.

Luckily, our local governments often have restrictions in place to keep residents safe.

Some city laws have prohibited, or restricted ownership of certain breeds, particularly pit bulls or other dogs bred for weapons. Plus, certain codes such as 17 California Code of Regulations 2606 requires doctors to report dog bites. So, if any dog bites you, make sure you see a doctorthat way, the incident is documented and properly reported.

While certain statistics may indicate that one breed is more dangerous than another, the truth is that it really just depends. When it comes to an unfamiliar dog, how can you know if theyve been abused or are untrained?

The bottom line is that any dog has the potential to attack and cause serious injuries.

So, if youve been bitten by a dog and have serious injuries, make sure to get the proper medical treatment as soon as possible.
