German Shepherd Types – 5 Types of German Shepherds

“German Shepherd dogs are a good choice for a variety of owners due to their intelligence and well-balanced character,” Bill explains.

“They can be a good addition to a family but can also be a great four-legged companion for a single owner or a couple. However, they are large and very active dogs that require more than a two hours exercise every day, which means they are better suited for owners with a larger house with a garden, and someone who enjoys exercise and spending time outdoors.”

German Shepherd + Collie = Shollie

The Shollie is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the German Shepherd and the Collie. These mutts are highly defensive of their loved ones. However, they demonstrate excellent delicacy with their relatives, making them fantastic puppies for the family. The German Shepherd Border Collie Mix is ideal for active families to keep up with his workaholic nature.

Difference Between Working Line And Show Line Types

Dogs that were bred to work, rather than to show, usually have fewer health problems, fewer temperament issues, and more variation in color and coat type. German Shepherd dogs that are bred for show are bred to conform to a very specific set of standards and the dogs in a litter that do not adhere to those standards are generally not used for further breeding. This is not true of working stock, who can look exactly the same as a show dog, with the typical black saddle and tan body, or can be completely black or even completely tan. Sable is the most common color for working stock German Shepherds since sable is the dominant color gene in this breed.

When it comes to temperament, these dogs often have more intense personalities than their show counterparts. This often because breeders of these types focused on energy and loyalty when selecting individuals to breed. They love working and some owners might find that if they do not find some sort of job for their dog, that they will start acting out. Not every working dog will demand to be a drug sniffer or a security guard, but they will often demand to be near their owners almost constantly. These dogs will love to learn tricks and even some more advanced tasks like fetching specific items or opening doors.

If you choose a working line dog, give them something to do.

Czech German Shepherd Working Lines

This is because former Czechoslovakia shared a border with East Germany. They were the result of communist rule.Because they have a strong labor structure where they were supposed to patrol the borders, they are strong and fast and able to endure long hours of difficult work in the field. They have a dark coat that is smooth and shiny. They have a small tan, cream, or red patches, mostly on the feet and legs, with black or striped tips over most of the body, giving them a predominantly dark appearance. However, some Czechs may be solid black and have other color variations. Their bodies are strong, rigid, and well proportioned. They look more like wolves than any other line. Because of their rigorous training, these dogs are extremely loyal and obedient.

Expert Tip: They are also very intelligent and able to learn quickly and understand quite complex concepts compared to other dog breeds. This breed requires a high level of training and exercise.

What Is The Rarest Type Of German Shepherd

Isabella German Shepherd is not a unique name for a dog, even though you might think it is. Instead, its one of the most gorgeous coat colors youll ever see. According to history, it dates back to the late 15th century. It is named after Queen Isabella, who announced that she would not change her dress until Spain won the Siege of Granada. As a result, the color of her dress changed to a pale shade of red with white and black remnants. Isabella-colored German Shepherds, also known as purple German Shepherds, are the rarest of the breed when it comes to German Shepherds. Their pigmentation is the result of the recessive combination of blue and liver that comes from their parents. These dogs have a diluted color and the black pigment of the liver gene that the parents pass on to their offspring. As a result, these dogs have no black pigment on the edges of their eyes, nose, or paw pads. They have either light blue or hazel eyes. Most Isabella German Shepherds have a medium-length, double coat. However, some German Shepherds are long-haired. Believe it or not, this small difference in coat length can affect your pooch quite a bit. Long-haired German Shepherds are not suited for many jobs that German Shepherds normally do. That is why they are kept as pets, and that is how they have been treated for generations.

    East German Working Line Dogs

If the Czech German Shepherds were the result of Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, then the East German Shepherds came about as a result of World War II right after West Germany was separated from East Germany because of the Berlin Wall. As trade outside East Germany ceased, the East German working line was preserved.East German dogs were bred for strength and athleticism, with straight top lines and large, strong heads. If the dog is completely free of hip dysplasia, it can be bred. The government has incredibly high standards when it comes to breeding these dogs. It has taken full control of this dog breed and prevents the gene pool from being altered by outside influences to ensure that all dogs are free of health problems. East German Working Line Sheepdogs are incredibly strong and powerful. Physical tests require them to jump up to six feet, balance on a narrow beam pass tracking tests, and search blinds. In addition, each puppy is tested before being sold to ensure there are no health issues. They can endure very bad weather for a long period of time. Because of their breeding history, GDR dogs were used to actively guard the 850-mile East German border and the 100-mile Berlin Wall. These dogs served as guard dogs, sniffer dogs, and attack dogs.

A similar diagnosis applies to a 22-inch female adult.

Different Coat Types On German Shepherd Dogs

Most German Shepherd Dogs have a medium length, thick, coarse coat.

But a small number carry two copies of a recessive gene for long hair, which means they grow long coats.

In most countries, a long coat is regarded as undesirable by GSD purists.

The AKC, Kennel Club and FCI all record purebred longhaired Germans Shepherds on the same register as their shorthaired counterparts, but theyre disqualified from taking part in shows.

The Australian National Kennel Club has taken a slightly different approach.

In Australia, long haired GSDs are recorded separately on their own register.

Theyre called German Shepherd Dogs, and their breed standard is word-for-word the same as the German Shepherd Dogs, except for the description of coat length.

They can enter the show ring in the German Shepherd class, where theyll be judged against other long haired GSDs.

This is the only true example of a different type of German Shepherds.

    A Shared Herding Heritage

Both the Malinois and German Shepherd are members of the Herding Group and can trace their origins to livestock herding dogs. As their names imply, the Belgian Malinois was developed in Belgium and the German Shepherd in Germany.

The Malinois was one of four varieties of Belgian Shepherd Dog in use in the late 1800s. It was first recognized by Professor Adolphe Reul. He characterized the variety as a medium-sized square dog with dark brown eyes and triangular ears. Each of the four types of Belgian Shepherd Dog was named for the area around Brussels where it was developed, with the Malinois hailing from the Malines region.

As the agricultural lifestyle declined, the Belgian Shepherd Dog became favored in the development of police dog training, according to Ann MacKay, who has owned Belgian Malinois for 32 years and bred them for 26,

In fact, as early as 1908, the AKC Gazette mentioned that two Belgian Sheepdogs had been imported into the United States to work as police dogs in New York City. More were imported in 1911, including two specifically identified in the AKC studbook as Malinois. Finally, in 1959 the Belgian Malinois was granted full AKC recognition as a breed of its own, separate from the other Belgian Shepherd Dog varieties.

    Children And Other Pets

If they’re well-trained and have had plenty of exposure to kids, especially as a puppy, a German Shepherd is a great companion for children. In fact, some say they’re a cross between a babysitter and a cop, both gentle with, and protective of, the children in their family.

This is a big dog, though, capable of mistakenly bumping a toddler or small child. True to their reserved nature, they’re not tail-wagging friendly with kids they don’t know, but they’re generally trustworthy.

The German Shepherd can also live peacefully with other dogs and pets, as long as they’re taught to do so from puppyhood. Introducing an adult German Shepherd to a household with other pets can be more difficult if the dog isn’t used to getting along with other dogs or cats. You may need to hire a professional trainer to help, or get advice from the rescue organization if that’s where you acquired the adult German Shepherd.
