What Happens If Your Dog Eats Bread Dough

If your pup gets some bread dough in his tummy, this could lead to stomach bloat. But that isnt the only danger, unfortunately. The main risk is the release of ethanol from the yeast. If ethanol becomes absorbed into your dogs bloodstream, they are at a high risk of alcohol poisoning.

Here are symptoms to look out for. They usually occur 30 minutes-2 hours after bread dough is ingested.

Risks Of Feeding Bread To Dogs

Bread itself is usually not toxic, but there are exceptions. Here is what you need to know about the risks of feeding bread to dogs to make sure your dog stays happy and healthy.

    Dangerous Bread Dough

If youve ever made bread from scratch, then you know that dough has to rise, preferably in a warm, moist, draft-free environment. Unfortunately for dogs that are fed bread dough, their stomachs offer optimum conditions for dough to rise.

The Merck Veterinary Manual lists bread dough as a food hazard for dogs. When a dog eats bread dough, the yeast continues to make the dough rise, distending your pups stomach and releasing toxic levels of ethanol into the bloodstream. The pressure of the rising dough can mimic and cause bloat, but the real danger is from the alcohol toxicosis. If your dog is fed bread dough or you suspect they have stolen bread dough, call your veterinarian immediately and look out for symptoms of alcohol toxicosis:

    • Depressed central nervous system

    Toxic Bread Ingredients

Unless your dog has an allergy to wheat, plain white or wheat bread probably wont hurt them. Not all breads are as harmless, though. Some breads contain toxic ingredients that should never be fed to dogs.

Garlic is another ingredient found in bread that can be toxic to dogs. Garlic bread might tempt your dogs nose, but can cause serious side effects, like abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and collapse.

How Much Should My French Bulldog Eat Per Day

Breeding French Bulldogs – 5 Tips for New Breeders

This question will depend on many variables. Age of your Frenchie, amount of daily activity and how often you feed your dog. Some people have extremely busy schedule and can only feed once daily while others have more time to feed smaller portions throughout the day.

Off course we recommend feeding minimum twice daily smaller portions rather than one big meal a day which can cause health issues in the long term. You want to develop healthy habits early on.

It is recommended to feed your French Bulldog puppy three small meals when they are under six months of age. By 6-9 months you can move to two meals daily as your Frenchie matures and ready to conquer the world !

For an adult French Bulldog with normal weight of 25 lbs baseline we would recommend 575 calories per day. This is based on our golden rule which is approximately 23 calories per pound of body weight per day.

We came up with this formula after speaking to many breeders and French Bulldog vets and experts. This formula can be your guideline at how much your Frenchie should eat per day.

As mentioned prior ideally the calories should be divided to smaller portions throughout the day.

There are many websites claiming you should feed your Frenchie upwards of 800 calories per day! This is probably true based on dogs that are in the same weight range but different breeds and highly active.

If you want a more accurate calculation based on weight and activity level check our Frenchie Dog Food Per Day Calculator.
