How To Make The Best Chocolate Chip Banana Bread From Scratch

Making banana bread is much easier than most people would believe. It’s all done in one bowl with really simple ingredients, and the results are perfect loaves every time. Here are some tips on ensuring you make phenomenal banana bread:

To ensure you have seriously moist banana bread, you need really overripe bananas. The ones that the kids look at and won’t eat because they’re not super yellow anymore but you know they’re still edible and you don’t want to waste them? Use those. They’re super sweet and add a ton of moisture to anything you add them to, so they’re perfect for banana bread.

Pro tip: if you end up only having 2 bananas to use, replace the missing banana with applesauce! Applesauce will not only give the moisture and sweetness in lieu of the missing banana but can be used in place of some of the butter too if you are low on butter!

For this recipe, all you need is one bowl, a hand mixer or whisk, and a wooden spoon or a spatula. Three tools that everyone has in the kitchen, right? The hand mixer is needed to cream the butter and brown sugar together.

Creaming the butter and sugar together makes the crumb of the banana bread light and fluffy, so you won’t have to worry about it being dense and heavy. The brown sugar also adds a deeper flavor than granulated sugar, since it has molasses in it, makes the bread softer, and it adds more moisture. We want this banana bread deeply moisturized, y’all.

How To Ripen Bananas For Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Dont have ripe bananas on hand? There are a few ways you can speed up the ripening process to make your bananas perfect for banana bread!

  • The night before, break apart your bananas and place them in a brown paper bag. It blocks just enough oxygen which allows the bananas to release a chemical called ethylene. This is what speeds up the ripening process.
  • Place them on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes at 300F. Theyre ready when theyve turned COMPLETELY brown. Let them cool before using.
  • If youre in a pinch, you can microwave your bananas. Pierce the banana with a fork a few times and microwave it for 30 seconds 1 minute.
  • Lastly, your best bet to find already ripe bananas is to look for single bananas at the grocery store. They usually keep a pile at the bottom of the banana display.
  • And there you have it! Ripe bananas that are going to make your chocolate chip banana bread extra delicious.

If you already have frozen ripe bananas, you can also use those. Just leave them out for about 30 minutes to 1 hour in order to thaw before using.

What You Need To Make This Recipe

Bananas you have to use overripe bananas for this to work. They should have brown and black spots all over and be soft so they are really easy to mash. Overripe bananas are extra sweet and soft making them perfect for baking with.

Vanilla use vanilla extract for a real vanilla taste and stay away from vanilla essence which is synthetic.

Butter softened butter is a must so bring it out of the fridge in advance. Its creamed together with the sugar and the only way to do that is by using softened, room-temperature butter.

Sugar I use granulated sugar for this but brown sugar will also work.

Chocolate chips I love to use semi-sweet chocolate chips because banana bread is already really sweet. If you want you can use bittersweet chocolate which will also be delicious or even milk chocolate if you dont mind the extra sweetness.

Salt even in sweet recipes salt is an important ingredient, you dont need much at all but it really enhances the flavors!

How Many Cups Is 1 Mashed Banana

    Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

This can be tricky! If a recipe calls for 3 bananas, how much is that? We all know that measurements are important in baking, so the difference between a very small banana and a very large banana can be significant when baking a loaf of banana bread.

My recipe calls for 1 ½ cups of mashed banana. One large banana yields about ½ cup mashed, so I used 3 large bananas for a total of about 1 ½ cups. If youre working with small bananas, youll need at least 4 . Measuring is always the safest way to make sure that your banana bread turns out perfectly moist, sweet, and delicious!

How to turn this recipe into muffins?

If youre looking for the same great flavor, but in a more compact, easy-to-travel form you can bake this recipe as muffins! Use the same batter and portion out evenly between 12 standard muffin tins. Bake at the same temperature but check after 20 minutes with a toothpick. If clean, pull them out and allow them to cool fully before packing for lunch!

Why is my banana bread not moist?

The consistency of chocolate banana bread depends on two things: flour and banana. The banana, when fully incorporated into the batter will make the banana bread super moist. Bananas do vary in size, so be sure to weigh the bananas for accuracy.

Another reason your banana bread could be dry is due to how the flour is weighed. Never scoop flour directly from the bag or jar, youll end up with more flour than you actually need. Be sure to grab a spoon and carefully spoon it into your measuring cup. For even more accuracy, weigh out sifted flour using a digital scale.

Why is my banana bread not fluffy?

Chances are you overmixed the batter. Its easy to do, no hard feelings. But as the batter is mixed, gluten is developed. The more gluten is developed the more dense and chewy the baked bread will be.

Can bananas be too ripe for banana bread?

What chocolate chips should I use?

Semi-sweet chocolate chips are easy to find and add just enough sweetness to the finished chocolate banana bread.

Why Does My Banana Bread Fall In The Middle

If you find that your banana bread sinks in the middle as it cools, its likely because the bread was not completely cooked through. Banana bread forms a nice, dark crust on the outside that makes the loaf look done even if the inside is still slightly raw. Before removing the bread from the oven, insert a toothpick deep into the very center of the loaf. If it comes out with any wet batter on it, return the bread to the oven to finish baking.

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe: Frequently Asked Questions

    Banana Chocolate Chip Bread Recipe

Can I make this banana bread gluten free?

I have not tested this specific recipe, but I have a delicious recipe for gluten free banana bread thats just as moist! Just add chocolate chips.

Can I use plain yogurt instead?

If you dont have Greek yogurt or sour cream, you can also use plain unsweetened yogurt.

Can I use less sugar in this recipe?

Sugar plays a big role in the moist texture of this bread. Adjusting it will likely change the banana bread. For a refined sugar free option, try swapping all of the sugar with coconut sugar.

Why did my banana bread sink in the middle?

This is likely due to two missteps: 1. You over mixed the batter. Over mixing develops the gluten strands in the flour, creating a more dense and heavy batter. Mix just until the ingredients are combined. This is why its important to mix the batter by hand. 2. Your pan is too small. 9×5 loaf pans can vary in size, as mine is about 9.5x5x5 inches. If you have a smaller loaf pan, only fill the pan about 2/3 full. Any more than than and the center of the banana bread will have trouble baking all the way through.

Do I need to make this banana bread with chocolate chips?

If you just want plain banana bread, you can leave out the chocolate chips. Alternatively, you can add nuts instead.
