Jesus Feeds The Five Thousand
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, This is a remote place, and its already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.
16 Jesus replied, They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.
17 We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish, they answered.
18 Bring them here to me, he said.19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

What are five small barley loaves and two small fish, and what am I, in front of such great injustice?
The abyss of injustice is dark and deep,surrounding us on every flank. We see it at the bottom of jails where forgotten convicts die of sadness. We find it behind bars where refugees and their children wait for resolution. We feel it in the cold rooms of hospitals and below bridges where brothers and sisters are ill and alone. What are five small barley loaves and two small fish for five thousand, and what am I in front of such injustice and despair?
It was an evening in spring when Jesus and his friends were sitting on a grassy hilltop. Below them was the sea of Galilee shimmering under the evening sun. The Galilean desert was flowering, and Passover was near. The multitudes were looking for Jesus, they had seen him around town, eating with friends, speaking with neighbors. Suddenly the whole town seemed to be brimming with hopefulness, and now they did not want to let him go. Jesus had seen them in the villages and had sensed their sadness. He had felt their sense of loss and despair and now as the day came to an end, he felt their hunger. As he looked at the multitude, a decision was made in his heart. Before the day ended, a great feast would take place and everyone would be invited .
Jesus listens but is unfazed.
The Feeding Of The 5000 People
The Feeding of the 5,000 is also known as the “miracle of the five loaves and two fish” the Gospel of John reports that Jesus used five loaves and two fish supplied by a boy to feed a multitude. According to Matthew’s gospel, when Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been killed, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Luke specifies that the place was near Bethsaida. The crowds followed Jesus on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
Jesus said that they did not need to go away, and therefore the disciples were to give them something to eat. They said that they only had five loaves and two fish, which Jesus asked to be brought to him. Jesus directed the people to sit down in groups on the grass. In Mark’s Gospel, the crowds sat in groups of 50 and 100, and in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus’ instructions were to seat the crowd in groups of 50, implying that there were 100 such groups.
In John’s Gospel, the multitude has been attracted around Jesus because of the healing works he has performed, and the feeding of the multitude is taken as a further sign that Jesus is the Messiah.

Ii Gods Unlimited Love Fills Us With Confidence
The Liturgy of the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time should encourage us to have extraordinary confidence in Providence, for, once we are united to Jesus, we can say with St. Paul in todays second reading:
What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through Him Who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord .
The Apostle, who had already experienced all of these trials, maintained his strength of soul, apostolic zeal, and burning desire to conquer the world because he felt Gods love envelop him. If we ponder the fact that the Father desired the Incarnation of His Only-begotten Son, equal to Him, into our weak nature, to endure unspeakable suffering and obtain salvation for us, we can acquire a notion of the magnitude of this love.
St. Thomas Aquinas13 teaches that Gods love is so efficacious that it instils goodness in the creature He loves. Thus, when we encounter a person who is very good, we can be certain that God loves him in a special way.

Gospel For The 18th Sunday In Ordinary Time
13 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, He withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed Him on foot from their towns.
14 When He disembarked and saw the vast crowd, His heart was moved with pity for them, and He cured their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples approached Him and said, This is a deserted place and it is already late dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves. 16 Jesus said to them, There is no need for them to go away give them some food yourselves. 17 But they said to Him, Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.
18 Then He said, Bring them here to Me, 19 and He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to Heaven, He said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
20 They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over twelve wicker baskets full. 21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children .
Miracles In The Bible
Because it falls so far outside the bounds of rational explanation, the feeding of the five thousand is one of the miracles in the Bible that detractors have the most trouble accepting.
Detractors propose that Jesus simply broke the loaves of bread and fish into tiny specks of food and gave each person a speck. Several facts presented in the story discount that proposal. Firstly, feeding of the five thousand is reported in all four gospels. It was a widely visible event. Trickery would have been difficult. Secondly, the story concludes with an explanation that rules out deception. After the people had eaten, they were full and there were twelve basketfuls of broken loaves of bread and fish left over!

What God Can Do With Five Loaves Of Bread And Two Fish
Giving Tuesday is such an important day for many Christian ministries. Some ministries will inform you that they have a donor who will match your gifts, making it possible to double the effect of your contribution. At the Christian Action League, we have no such donor. I wish we did. It certainly makes for a stronger appeal. Nevertheless, during my private devotions the other day, I came across something in Scripture that I think might be even better.
In Matthew 14:13-21, we read about a miracle that Jesus performed.
Jesus had taken a boat to a remote place to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was going and followed him on foot from many towns. When he saw the throngs of people waiting for him on the seashore, the Bible says that he had compassion for them and healed their sick.
After ministering to so many people that day, when it became evening, Jesus disciples urged him to send the multitudes away to go into the villages to buy bread for themselves. The people were hungry at this point, and the hard-working disciples were, too.
However, Jesus said sending everyone away wasnt necessary. The people could eat right where they were. Then he challenged his disciples with something that seemed impossible. He said to them, you feed them.
But, but, but.but Lord, they said. How can we feed so many when we have only five loaves of bread and two fish?
Jesus instructed them, Bring me what you have. And this is what happened next:

Jesus Gives Thanks Before Breaking The Loaves
Jesus gives thanks before breaking the loaves of bread. Christians know it is their responsibility to thank God for the provisions he afforded. In this instance, we probably even know the prayer that Jesus offered. A common Jewish prayer before eating was this:
Blessed are thou, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

Multiplication Is A Result Of Gods Work Not Our Work
The boy handed over his meal. This was certainly an act of trust and sacrifice. But the boy did not feed the five thousand. Nor did the disciples feed the five thousand. The boy and the disciples were simply participants. The people were fed by Jesus. Stomachs were full because an act of God took place. Apart from this act, the people would have remained hungry. His act allowed the boy to participate in Gods work.
The same is true for us. God wants us to trust him with our possessions and work to advance his Kingdom. But ultimately, it is not our possessions or work that will cause the multiplication. We give and work, knowing that it is God who is in control, and it is His work that causes multiplication. While we eagerly participate in His mission, He multiplies the bread and fish. Multiplication is a result of Gods work, not our work. The boy learned this on that day.
The boy with two fish and five loaves learned a lot that day. He learned God is in control, and that He is about multiplication. He learn that multiplication often starts with an act of trust and sacrifice. And he learned that while we certainly get to participate, it is ultimately God who brings about the multiplication.
So, if you feel you have little, look to the boy with two fish and five loaves. Remember what he learned that day. Trust God with your resources, and let him multiply those resources in ways you could have never imagined.
